Caitlin Whitehead's first career shutout and two goals and an assist from
Taylor Lum paced the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 3-0 victory over the RIT Tigers in Canton, N.Y. on a special Saturday afternoon in Appleton Arena, honoring Joe Marsh for his induction into the Legends of Appleton.
Both teams traded chances to open the first period.
RIT had an early breakaway chance, but a strong backcheck from Saints' defender
Kristina Bahl broke up the play. At the thirteen-minute mark, Sophie Bellina turned aside
Anna Segedi's shot on a two-on-one opportunity for the Saints.
A minute later, Lum grabbed the first goal of the game.
Shailynn Snow drove towards the net and had her shot blocked. Lum corralled the loose puck and her backhand shot beat Bellina under her blocker.
Lum's goal sparked the Saints. SLU dominated the territorial possession for most of the period.
RIT had their first sustained offensive zone time since the Lum goal during their first power-play opportunity with four minutes to go in the period. Whitehead made sharp saves through traffic, and the Scarlet and Brown took the one goal lead into the intermission.
Shots-on-goal after one period were 14-5 in favor of St. Lawrence.
The second period saw both goaltenders making highlight reel saves.
Whitehead flashed the leather on an odd-player rush four minutes into the period that garnered appreciation from the Appleton faithful.
Bellina kept RIT within striking distance throughout the period. The Tigers had trouble keeping up with St. Lawrence's speed through the neutral zone, but Bellina's strong play and stellar rebound control kept the Saints off the board in the middle frame.
After two periods of play, Bellina had twenty-four saves and Whitehead had eight.
In the third, the Lum, Snow, and
Aly McLeod line came up big again for the Saints.
Halfway through the period, McLeod gained momentum through the neutral zone and fed Lum for a give-and-go. McLeod crashed the net and beautifully tipped in a pass from Lum to extend St. Lawrence's lead to two.
With just over two minutes remaining in the game, RIT drew their fourth powerplay of the game and pulled their goalie.
SLU's penalty killers came up big during this penalty kill as they did all game.
Kennedy Wilson,
Gabi Jones,
Suyeon Eom, and Snow all had outstanding blocks to keep RIT off the board throughout the game. The Saints finished with twenty-one blocked shots to RIT's eight.
With 30 seconds remaining, after a Whitehead save,
Melissa Jefferies cleared the puck off the glass. Lum raced down, beat an RIT defender, and tapped home a short-handed empty-net goal to secure the Saints victory.
"We had a really quick turnaround from yesterday' high-scoring and intense game. It was nice to gather together defensively and help Whitey get her first shutout," said Lum. "Overall, it was a great team effort."
Whitehead stopped eleven shots to earn her first career shutout, many of which were high quality scoring chances. Bellina finished with thirty-one saves.
"Certainly a nice bounce back win for our team after an emotional loss the night before in a wild game at Cornell", said head coach
Chris Wells. "The atmosphere and energy around the rink for Legends Weekend was felt by our players and they responded with a solid effort."
"This is a great weekend for both SLU Hockey teams and certainly for Joe Marsh, as he will be honored for all he has done as a Legend of Appleton," Wells added.
With the victory, the Saints improved to 7-5-0, while RIT fell to 2-11-0.
The Scarlet and Brown return to action on Thursday for the second edition of the Route 11 rivalry this season. Puck drops at 6:00 p.m. at Cheel Arena. Then on Saturday, Clarkson takes the short trip to Appleton Arena. The 2:00 p.m. game concludes the non-league weekend series.
Prior to today's game, Legends of Appleton honoree Joe Marsh dropped the puck for the women's game vs. RIT.
