Gosling, Hustler Tally Three Points, Saints Fall to No. 11 Clarkson in Overtime

Despite multiple three-point performances from Julia Gosling and Abby Hustler, the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell 5-4 in overtime to the Clarkson University Golden Knights in Cheel Arena on Thursday night.

The Golden Knights wasted no time to get the game's first goal. Less than two minutes into the first period, Clarkson's Olivia Hanson beat Saints' goaltender Lucy Morgan, who was screened by multiple players in front of her, over her glove-side shoulder.

Clarkson's had a chance to grab all the momentum when they drew a tripping penalty a minute after their goal, but SLU's penalty-kill came up big. Kennedy Wilson and Gabi Jones continued their strong penalty-killing, each clogging up shot lanes and making big-time blocks.

St. Lawrence, led by Gosling, showed great resilience to Clarkson's early momentum.

After entering the offensive zone, Anna Segedi fed Gosling, whose slapshot was stopped by a great pad save by Clarkson's Michelle Pasienchnyk. Segedi quickly shot the rebound that bounced back out to her, and it hit a combination of Pasienchnyk and the post. The rebound from that shot caromed back to Gosling, who shot it into the open net to tie the game.

Gosling would strike again two minutes later, on the power-play. She fed Hustler from the top of the circle and drove the net on a give-and-go. Gosling's initial shot was stopped by Pasienchnyk, but the rebound was put home by her.

Gosling's goals led SLU to a one goal lead after the first period and the Saints led shots-on-goal were 9-7 in the first frame.

Five minutes into the second period, Clarkson tied the game. Gabrielle David showcased good puck protection carrying the puck up ice into the Saints' defensive zone. She passed the puck backdoor, and it was eventually jammed under Morgan's blocker by Clarkson's Darcie Lappan.

Both teams traded chances for the remainder of the second. Clarkson's undisciplined play at the end of the period gave SLU an opportunity to grab a late goal.

On a five-on-three powerplay with six seconds remaining, Gosling won the faceoff back to defender Kristina Bahl, who passed it over to Abby Hustler. Hustler's slapshot hit Puddifant in-front of Pasienchnyk and it re-directed past her with two seconds remaining in the period.

The Saints led 3-2 after the middle frame.

Despite a huge momentum swing at the end of the second, the Golden Knights had a strong start to the third period. Three minutes into the period, David tapped a rebound off Morgan's mask into the open net.
Power-plays continued to have a big impact on the game. Only a few minutes later, on the power-play, Clarkson would grab the lead. Nicole Gosling's shot evaded traffic and landed in the upper corner.

SLU would respond again. After Hustler's hard forechecking efforts, the Saints regained possession in the offensive zone. Defenseman Katina Duscio froze the Clarkson defense and made a beautiful cross-ice pass to Hustler backdoor, who shot it into the wide-open net.

Neither team capitalized on opportunities at the end of regulation, sending the game to three-on-three overtime.

In overtime, Clarkson's Gretchen Branton made a nice spin-move in the corner, skated into the slot, and ripped a shot over Morgan's blocker to end an exciting game.

"Another wild one for us tonight. We fought back a couple times to get the lead and then to tie it late on a fantastic play," said head coach Chris Wells. "OT hasn't been our friend since it's gone to 3x3, but we are going to find a way to get on top the next time."

Morgan finished with 21 saves, Pasienchnyk had 27.

The Saints had a strong night on the power-play finishing two-for-four, while Clarkson was one-for-two.

With the loss, the Scarlet and Brown fell to 7-6-0, and the Golden Knights improved to 11-3-1.

"It was fun to watch our team and players enjoy the game and compete the way they did!" added Wells.

The Saints have an opportunity to earn a split in this non-conference series with Clarkson on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
