First-year
Kiley Mastel tallied two goals and four other members of the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team scored, but the Saints fell to ninth-ranked Cornell, 7-6, in a high-scoring back-and-forth battle on Friday night at Lynah Rink.
The Saints, who scored at least five goals for the third time this season were led by Mastel's two goals.
Julia Gosling finished with a goal and two assists, while
Abby Hustler and
Kristina Bahl recorded one of each and
Anna Segedi also scored for the Scarlet and Brown.
Just 31 seconds into play,
Aly McLeod won the faceoff getting the puck to
Shailynn Snow. Snow sent the puck to Bahl at the top of the key, who sniped the one timer past Big Red goaltender Deanna Fraser for the 1-0 advantage.
Mckenna Van Gelder then tallied back-to-back goals in the span of two minutes to give Cornell a 2-1 edge. Gillis Frechette tacked on a third for the Bid Red, sending a shot past
Lucy Morgan, just under the crossbar.
The Saints rallied late in the first, as
Kennedy Wilson battled the puck up the right boards, dropped it back to Mastel, who slipped the puck between the legs of Fraser with just 4.3 seconds to play in the first frame to bring the Scarlet and Brown back within one.
Shots showed 9-8 in favor of the Big Red after one.
Julia Gosling would tie it up for the Saints early in the second, as she picked up the puck at the Saints blue line and skated into Cornell territory. Her original shot was blocked, but she reloaded and sent a long-range shot past Fraser to tie the game 3-3 just 47 seconds into the period.
After two big scrambles in front of the Saints' goal, Kaitlin Jockins capitalized with a tip just outside the crease off the shot from Ashley Messier to put the Big Red back up 4-3 on the power play.
In a back-and-forth fashion,
Abby Hustler tied the game 4-4, and Mastel scored her second of the game on a bounce just outside the crease to put the Scarlet and Brown up 5-4. Messier would strike back on the power play and tie the game once more, 5-5.
After the Saints fifth goal, Belle Mende replaced Fraser in goal for the Big Red.
At the 5:41 mark of the third,
Anna Segedi sent home a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play with assists to
Katina Duscio and Gosling for the 6-5 lead.
Soon after, Frechette was sent to the box for a five-minute major for cross checking.
If you didn't have whip lash just yet, Izzy Daniel capitalized on an interception and scored on a short-handed breakaway to tie it up 6-6 at the 9:15 mark of the third. Cornell's Lily Delianedis would score the eventual game winner, also shorthanded, just about a minute and a half later as she beat Morgan on the blocker side for the win.
St. Lawrence played the final minute with a 6-on-5 advantage and sent a flurry of shots on goal but couldn't quite capitalize.
"It was a wild one down here in Ithaca tonight," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Last shot wins this type of game and we found ourselves on the downside of it unfortunately, but there was lots to like about the way we played. ECAC Hockey is going to be an every night battle this year."
Van Gelder led the Big Red with two goals, while Messier and Frechette each recorded a goal and an assist.
Morgan stopped 21 shots for the Saints, while Fraser finished with 10 and Mende made nine for Cornell.
Cornell improved to 4-1-0 on the season, while the Saints fell to 6-5-0. Both teams moved to 2-1-0 in ECAC action.
"We will have a quick turnaround for our home game vs. RIT tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.," Wells added. "It will be nice to be around for all the Joe Marsh festivities around Appleton tomorrow."
The Saints have broken up a weekend of ECAC play and will head back to the North Country to host RIT on Saturday at 2 p.m. as a part of the Legends of Appleton weekend in Canton.
