Trent Adamson had a season high in points and rebounds as the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team narrowly lost to the Ephs of Williams by three points in a packed Burkman Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The senior scored 16 and came down with 10 boards.
Adamson scored six of the Saints' first eight points, and after five minutes the home-team led 8-5. With eight and a half minutes left in the half, Alex Lee hit a three-pointer to give the Ephs their first lead at 15-12. The first half was never more than a one-possession game, and Williams hit a mid-range jumper with five seconds left to go into the break up 25-24.
The no. 6-ranked team in the country came out in the second half and scored six straight to make it a seven-point game. After the teams traded buckets twice,
Trey Syroka stole an outlet pass and scored a fastbreak layup. On the next possession
Aidan Macaulay picked off a pass and laid in the easy two to cut the lead to just three at 35-32. After a William's free-throw, St. Lawrence again went to Adamson in the paint who hit a layup through contact. After a defensive stop, Macaulay hit a cutting Adamson who slammed home the ball to tie the game at 36.
Williams again stretched their lead to six, but the Saints never let them put more of a run together. Macaulay hit a layup, and after an offensive foul,
Will Engelhardt hit a step-back three to make it a one-point game at 43-42. The Ephs responded with a three, and the Saints went right back to Adamson, who scored his 16
th points of the game to bring the score back to two-points. The Ephs went to their big-man who had been hard to contain all day, Nate Karren, who laid in his 11
th field goal of the game.
With just over two minutes left,
Jack Wirtanen hit a put-back layup to bring the score to 48-46, which would be the last field goal of the afternoon for either team. In the final two minutes each team was coming up with the defensive stops they needed, and Williams took the win 50-47.
"We are so disappointed with tonight's result," said head coach
Chris Downs. "We expected to win. Williams is a good team, and they exposed things that we need to improve on. I appreciated our guys effort tonight, we played hard."
Along with Adamson' 16 and 10 game, Syroka finished with 10 points and four rebounds, and Macaulay had nine points and six rebounds.
William's Karren finished with 23 points and nine rebounds. Canton native Declan Porter had seven points and six rebounds in 31 minutes.
