Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Giannone Scores First Goal, Saints Rebound with 5-2 Win Over Mercyhurst

Julia Gosling recorded two goals and first-year Morgan Giannone scored her first in Scarlet and Brown to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey to a 5-2 win over Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Gosling tallied two goals and an assist, while Chloé Puddifant, Morgan Giannone and Kristina Bahl also scored for the Saints. Shailynn Snow finished with a pair of assists, while Suyeon Eom, Kiley Mastel and Anna Segedi each added a helper.

The Mercyhurst defense cleared the puck out of their own zone and after a bit of a scramble in the slot, Liliane Perreault slid the puck across to Vanessa Upson, who beat Morgan on her blocker side to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

The Saints were quick to answer, as Snow and Mastel worked to pull the puck off the left boards, Mastel sent the puck to Gosling, who tipped the puck at a low angle past Ena Nystrøm, for her second of the weekend.

Mercyhurst claimed the first power-play advantage, but it was successfully killed off by the Saints, who never allowed a shot by the Lakers.

St. Lawrence claimed its first lead of the series, as Bahl fired in from the blue line, and Segedi tipped it past Nystrøm for the 2-1 lead with 7:13 remaining in the first.

With 1:43 to play, Gosling sent the puck into the zone to Giannone at the crease, who notched her first collegiate goal for the Scarlet and Brown, making it 3-1 Saints.

The Saints led 14-9 in shots on goal after one.

After just over eight scoreless minutes to start the second, Snow and Gosling played a little give-and-go, and Gosling tallied her second of the game for the 4-1 advantage.

Puddifant then kept the puck in the Lakers' zone, skated in and fired one home increasing the lead to 5-1. Jada Brenon took over in goal following the Saints' fifth tally.

Marielle Parks added one more for the Lakers' but were unable to mount a comeback over the Saints lead.

"All the pieces fell into place today for sure," said head coach Chris Wells. "We picked up a little confidence and you could see players start to play loose and hard. We generated plenty of chances again today from the entire team. Lucy made some key saves and we scored some goals in back-to-back games."

Morgan made 25 saves for the Saints, while Nystrøm made 16, before being relieved by Brenon, who finished with 22.

Much like Tuesday, the Saints dominated in shots 85-45, including a 43-27 spread in shots on goal.

"The best part of a losing streak… is ending it! Our players deserved a reward for all their work over the last few weeks. They got it today and it feels good. Happy Thanksgiving to the SLU community!"

With today's win, Wells hit a milestone and earned his 250th career win with the Scarlet and Brown! Wells ranks 33rd among the top 100 all-time winningest women's hockey coaches, sits behind former New Hampshire coach Brian McCloskey, who holds 32nd with 252.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-10-0 on the season, while Mercyhurst fell to 7-7-0.

The Saints will return home to Appleton Arena and back to ECAC play, as they take on Dartmouth and Harvard on December 2-3.
