Julia Gosling scored to tie the game at three, but Mercyhurst's Thea Johansson's recorded a hat trick to lead the Lakers to a 6-4 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Tuesday night in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Aly McLeod also scored for the Scarlet and Brown in game one, while Segedi,
Kiley Mastel,
Abby Hustler and Bahl recorded assists in the action. Â
Sara Boucher put the Lakers on the board early, scoring just 38 seconds into the opening period, putting a high shot past Saints' goaltender
Caitlin Whitehead on her glove side.
Thea Johansson scored her first of the game for Mercyhurst at the 8:46 mark, going five hole and just barely sneaking the puck past Whitehead, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead over the Scarlet and Brown at 8:46 of the first.
After the first period of play, the Saints held a 12-10 edge in shots on goal.
Kennedy Wilson nearly scored on a quick breakaway to start the second, but was turned away by Laker's netminder Ena Nystrøm.
Shortly after on a set of matching minors, Sydney Pederson increased Mercyhurst's lead to 3-0 during four-on-four action, with just about eight minutes remaining in the second.
Just before the end of the second, Segedi broke the barrier for the Scarlet and Brown, making it 3-1 at 19:09 in the second.
The Saints continued to dominate, sending a flurry of shots at Nystrøm, as Bahl and Gosling scored just about five minutes apart to knot the game 3-3 by the 6:11 mark of the third.
Mercyhurst responded, as Pederson added her second of the night and Johansson tallied two more for the hat trick and the 6-3 lead.
Aly McLeod struck from the slot to close the gap to two once more, but the Lakers would hold on to their two-goal lead and the 6-4 win.
"Saying another wild one is now sounding like a broken record," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We attempted more shots than we ever have this year and had a lot on net. We just ran out of time unfortunately. This is a resilient group and we will be ready to go tomorrow before a small break for the holiday."
Whitehead made 29 saves between the pipes for the Saints, while Nystrøm stopped 51 for the Lakers.
St. Lawrence finished with a 55-35 spread in shots on goal and dominated in shots 94-59. Both teams tallied one power play goal each on the night.
The Saints fell to 7-10-0 on the season, while Mercyhurst improved to 7-6-0.
The Lakers and the Saints will faceoff again tomorrow for game two of this week's series at 2 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Arena.
