Shailynn Snow scored her first of the season and
Kiley Mastel tallied her fifth, but the fifth-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcat's would score four unanswered goals to top the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 5-2 in Hamden, Conn. on Saturday afternoon in ECAC play.
The Saints started out strong with quality chances from
Abby Hustler, Snow and
Julia Gosling, but Bobcat's goaltenders Logan Angers kept the Saints off the board.
The Bobcats were first to the scoresheet, as Quinnipiac's line swarmed in on an odd-man rush and Maya Labad beat Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan on her glove side with a shot to the top right corner for the 1-0 lead with 5:45 to play in the first.
After one period in Hamden, the Bobcats held a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal.
The Saints rallied early in the second, as Gosling dropped the puck back near the stick of Angers and Snow beat the Bobcat's defense to the puck and backhanded it past Angers to tie the game with her first goal of the season.
St. Lawrence got its first power-play opportunity of the game, as Zoe Uens was sent off for interference and the Scarlet and Brown sent in a flurry of four shots on net, but Angers stopped three out of the four and one went wide.
The momentum shifted in the second frame, as the Saints peppered in 16 shots on goal to Quinnipiac's four.
Just 3:59 into the third, Gosling sent a shot on net from the point, Angers kicked out a rebound and Mastel stormed in and scored glove side for her fifth goal of the season and the 2-1 lead.
The Bobcat's tied the game at the 10:59 mark, as Labad's initial shot was bobbled and Kate Reilly capitalized on the rebound to knot it up 2-2.
Just over two minutes later, Olivia Mobley would put the Bobcat's in the lead for the second time, making it 3-2, with 7:06 to go.
Quinnipiac would continue on their four-goal run with a goal from Madison Chantler and an empty netter from Shay Maloney for the eventual 5-2 win.
"We probably played one of our best games of the year," said head coach
Chris Wells. "We had chances galore throughout the game and we were unable to finish. Quinnipiac is such a good team in transition and they capitalized on a few players to finish off the game. We keep learning and getting better, unfortunately we have had a lot of heartbreakers the last few months."
Morgan finished with 28 saves for the Saints, while Angers made 27.
The Bobcat's finished with a 33-29 advantage in shots on goal, while both teams recorded 53 shots apiece. Both teams successfully killed off the other's power play chances.
St. Lawrence fell to 7-9-0 on the season and 2-3-0 in conference play, while Quinnipiac improved to 12-1-0 and 6-1-0, respectively.
The Saints will continue their six-game stance over a period of 13 days, as they travel to Erie, Pennsylvania for a double-header against Mercyhurst on November 22-23. Game times are scheduled for 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday and 2:05 p.m. on Wednesday.
