Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Morgan Stops 37 Shots in Saints' 1-0 Loss to No. 15 Princeton

Lucy Morgan made 37 saves and the Saints' top line poured 14 shots on goal, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team fell 1-0 to No. 15 Princeton University at the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink in Princeton, N.J.

The Saints fell to 7-8-0 on the year and 2-2-0 in ECAC play, while the Tigers improved to 4-3-0, and 2-3-0 in league play.

The Tigers, who were armed with an early power play, had the better of the chances in the early going and capitalized on the momentum with the game's opening goal.

Anna Segedi carried a Saints' faceoff win into the Princeton zone but was spun around leaving the Tigers on a counterattack going the other way. Emerson O'Leary carried possession into the St. Lawrence zone and gave it off to Maggie Connors. Connors centered a pass back to O'Leary, who tipped the puck five-hole past Morgan for the 1-0 lead.

Later in the first, the Scarlet and Brown were afforded their first power play chance of the contest. The Saints were able to generate some good offense but scoring chances from Chloé Puddifant and Abby Hustler were turned away by Jennifer Olnowich to keep the game at 1-0.

The Saints came out firing getting 12 shots off in the first five minutes of play, but Princeton would withstand the onslaught.

Midway through the second frame, St. Lawrence went on two power plays and continued to hunt their first goal. The Saints were able to pepper Olnowich but only got five shots onto the frame which were all turned away.

The Scarlet and Brown power play stayed busy in the third with their fourth chance of the afternoon. This chance was no different as Olnowich stopped the only shot that made its way to the net.

St. Lawrence had looked like it scored with 3:29 left in the game as Segedi got a dangerous puck onto the Tiger net. With the puck loose in from of Olnowich, Segedi out two shots on and was followed by Hustler, who was also attacking the crease. The puck somehow stayed out to keep the game at 1-0.

The Saints would pull Morgan late for an extra skater, but a high sticking call left St. Lawrence with a defensive zone draw which they could not turn into any significant offense as the clock struck zero.
Morgan tied her season-high with 37 saves in the narrow loss, while her counterpart held the Saints at bay with 30 saves of her own.

Julia Gosling was tied for the most shots in the contest with 12 shots with four of them finding the goal. Linemates Segedi and Hustler produced 18 shots between the two of them with 10 of them being saved.

"Another night where we had some great chances, but couldn't finish them off," said head coach Chris Wells. "Lucy did all she could to keep it 1-0 and give us a chance to get the equalizer. We will recharge and get ready to play tomorrow up in Hamden."

St. Lawrence and Princeton both went without a power play as the Saints went 0-for-4 on the power play and the Tigers went 0-for-3.

Shots came fast and furious as the two teams combined for 119 shot attempts and 68 shots on goal with Princeton holding the 38-30 edge in shots on goal.

The Scarlet and Brown will make the long trip up to Hamden, Conn. as they prepare to take on the No. 5 Quinnipiac Bobcats tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the M&T Bank Arena.
