Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Syroka Scores 19, Saints Top Plattsburgh in Season Opener

Trey Syroka scored 19 points to lead the St. Lawrence University's men's basketball team in a 12-point win over the Cardinals of Plattsburgh on Wednesday night in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Four Saints finished in double digits and eight scored as the team shot 58-percent from the floor and 41-percent from deep.

A Trent Adamson layup marked the first points of the 2022-23 campaign, and buckets from Syroka, Aiden Macaulay, and Will Engelhardt put St. Lawrence up 8-2, but the Cardinals scored the next six to bring the score level. The Saints used another run, and Jack Wirtanen and Carter Storey got their first points of the season, to lead 17-10, but again Plattsburgh responded and tied the game at 17. The Saints found their shooting touch, and were getting defensive stops, and a Syroka layup with under 20-seconds left in the half looked to give the Scarlet and Brown a double-digit lead at the break, but Ladan Graves hit a buzzer-beater to bring the score to 41-33. The Saints shot over 60-percent field goals in the half.

The second-half continued to be a game of runs. With just under 10 minutes, left Syroka got to the paint again and laid it in to lead by 18 at 59-41. Over the next five minutes the Cardinals chipped away at the lead to trail but just five, but the Saints collected themselves and went on a 11-1 run to lead by 15 with a minute left, and when the final horn sounded the Saints scoreboard read 77-65.

In addition to Syroka's 19, he had six assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Gavin Macaulay scored 15, Aiden Macaulay scored 13, and Trent Adamson had 12.

The Saints pounded the paint and scored 44 of their points from close range. Both teams had 16 fast-break points.

Plattsburgh hit nine three-pointers, led by Kevin Tabb who hit six on his way to 22 points. Myles Jones and Sheriff Conteh also finished with double figures.

Head coach Chris Downs
"Tonight was a good start for us on the road. Trey Syroka had his best performance of his St. Lawrence career. He had great body language, poise, and spent most of his night looking for teammates. We have a very tough stretch of games with two local rivalry games on Friday and Saturday on one days rest. It'll be a challenge for sure."

Records: St. Lawrence (1-0), Plattsburgh (1-2)
