The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team used nine second half three-pointers to spark their first win of the season over Husson on Sunday afternoon in Dartmouth, Mass.
Olivia Middleton scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished four assists in a team high 34 minutes to lead the Saints, and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Middleton got going early, scoring seven first quarter points, but the Saints trailed 12-13 after the opening 10 minutes. In the second quarter the Scarlet and Brown defense prevented an Eagles bucket for over three minutes, while Middleton,
Sierra Sanson, and
Caelan McHarney added to the tally and the Saints took a five-point lead. Husson did cut the lead to one, but that was as close as they would get, and St. Lawrence led 26-21 at half.
Both teams found their shooting touch after halftime. Husson out-scored the Saints 25-24, which included going 10 for 11 from the charity stripe.
Kristen Varin hit a pair of three-pointers and a lay-up to score eight of her 11 in the third.
The Eagles opened the final quarter with a three and a layup to lead 51-50, but a
Shannon Rhone jumper, a Varin three, and a Sanson layup put the Saints back up by six. The Saints would lead by as much as 12 in the final minute, and claimed their first win 73-63.
All 12 Saints got in the game and were led by Middleton's 22. Varin scored 11, all in the second half. Rhone finished with nine points and five assists. The scrappy Sanson contributed seven points, six rebounds and three assists.
Husson's Bailey Donovan led all players with 24 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles finished 13-14 from the line and shot over 44-percent from the floor. They used their size to out-score the Saints 36-20 in the paint, but St. Lawrence hit 12 three-pointers to their four.
Head coach Dan Roiger
"This was a good tournament for us, where we had to play two good teams. Today presented some serious size issues for us with both our bigs out with injury. We had great efforts from Sierra and Mason, but also a team effort to get the ball out of the post and to rebound. Finally, after grinding in our shooting for five quarters, we started making some shots. A very good effort today, and we needed every bit of it against a good team from Husson."
