Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints Come from Behind, Top Cardinals

The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team earned their second straight win with a 60-58 victory over the Plattsburgh Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon in Plattsburgh, N.Y. in a game that saw eight lead changes.

Cam Roberts scored a dozen points and grabbed eight rebounds, while first-year Jackie Malley scored 10 points to lead the Saints.

Plattsburgh ended the opening quarter with an 8-1 run to lead 16-8 after 10 minutes. The Cardinals led by as many as 12 in the second quarter, but an nine-point run by the Saints, which included a pair of layups from Roberts, gave St. Lawrence the 27-26 lead going into the halftime break.

Shannon Rhone hit a three-pointer to open the second half and extend the Scarlet and Brown's lead, but the Cardinals would out-score the Saints 16-9 the rest of the way to lead 42-39 going into the final 10 minutes.

Three of the lead changes came in the fourth quarter. With less than two minutes left Roberts scored from the paint for her 12th points of the game, but a Plattsburgh jumper brought it back to a one-possession game at 58-56. Rhone hit a pair of free-throws with 12 seconds left to make the final Cardinal layup irrelevant and the Saints won 60-58.

Malley hit two shots from deep on her way to double digits, and snagged six rebounds. Rhone also connected on a pair from beyond the arc. She finished with eight points, three boards, and three assists.

Plattsburgh had three in double figures, led by Mya Smith and Hannah Ruberto with 14 apiece. Payton Couture added 13.

The Saints out-shot the Cardinals 7-1 from deep, and 34 of the Scarlet and Brown points came from the bench.

Head coach Dan Roiger
"What an excited game for the Saints tonight. This is what early season basketball is all about. Gritty and tought, sometimes you just have to dig in and find a way even though not everything is going right."
