After a scoreless 110 minutes of soccer, it took a
Max Mogul penalty kick goal and a
Ben Woelfinger save to advance the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team past Roger Williams 0-0 in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Gooding Field in Amherst, Mass.
The Scarlet and Brown saw their record move to 13-1-6 with the tie, whole Roger Williams' season ended at 14-3-5.
The Saints will take on the No. 6-ranked Amherst College, who advanced with a 2-0 win over Husson earlier in the day.
"Another great performance from the team against a good Roger Williams team that is very well-coached," said head coach
Mike Toshack "We were unfortunate not to score on a couple of very good chances in the first half. Very proud of the composure and resilience displayed by the guys throughout the game, extra time, and especially in the shootout!"
St. Lawrence had the better of the Hawks in the first half outshooting the CCC Champions 10-8. In the final two minutes of the first half, it looked as if the Saints would break the tie with three great chances. The final of the three bids sailed wide with 11 seconds left on the clock as the game went to half.
Things evened up a touch in the second half with Roger Williams holding a narrow 8-7 edge in shots. With neither team able to provide a grade-A look, the second half ran empty to send the game to overtime.
St. Lawrence withstood the storm in the first ten-minute period as Woelfinger had to face five shots, while the Scarlet and Brown put just one shot on. The Saints dialed in during the second overtime outshooting the Hawks 4-2 but were unable to score the winner as the Siants' fate was to be decided in penalty kicks for the first time since the 2016 season when St. Lawrence fell to Washington and Lee in PK's.
First up for the Saints was
Marvin Sibanda, who buried a ball to the left to get the team on the board. Roger Williams countered with a goal before Mile Levy scored a penalty kick of his own to retake the lead.
The second round closed with a Roger Williams post, followed by a
Sam Pijpers post. And a Hawk make to put the match at 2-2.
Michael McDougald, and
Sam Peacock would get the Scarlet and Brown rolling again but were countered with Hawk goals making it a 4-4 contest. In the sixth-round things got tense and
Jeremy Ogango's shot rang off the post, but Woelfinger made the save of the year stopping the Roger Williams shot to keep the Saints in it.
Round seven started with Mogul, who ripped a shot high, to the left, and in to take a 5-4 lead. With the game hinging on the next kick, the Hawks forward put a high chip off the cross bar and out to give the Saints the win.
Woelfinger stopped 10 saves in his ninth clean sheet of the season and made his biggest save in the PK round. Roger Williams saved seven shots in what was a tough luck clean sheet for the keeper.
When the dust settled, the Hawks had a narrow 23-22 advantage in shots and a 10-7 lead in shots on goal. Roger Williams also had the narrow 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Scarlet and Brown advance to the second round for the first time since the 2015 season when the Saints were led to 2-1 and 2-0 wins at Sandy MacAllaster Field in the first and seconds rounds of the NCAA Tournament by first year head coach
Mike Toshack.
Waiting for St. Lawrence tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. will be the host No. 6 Amherst, who will welcome the Saints to Hitchcock Field.
