First year
Ryan Campbell and junior
Sam Pijpers were able to score in the first and second halves, but they could not overcome a four-goal Amherst opening half as the No. 15 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team fell 4-2 to No. 6 Amherst on Sunday afternoon.
The Saints' season ends at 13-2-6, while the Mammoths improved to 15-1-5.
Amherst wasted little time getting on the board as they scored just 1:21 into the contest. Ada Okorogheye found Nico Kenary for the goal to open the game. The two teams would battle it out for the next 20 minutes before the Mammoths would double their lead. Declan Sung buried a feed from Aidan Curtis to make it 2-0.
Amherst kept up the pressure scoring again 27:15 in as Niall Murphy beat
Ben Woelfinger to take a three-goal lead.
The Saints would not relent as they scored their first goal of the contest at the 38:12 mark.
Antonio Rogliano possessed the ball to the right of the Mammoths' keeper and centered a pass to Campbell in the box. The rookie fired a shot over the Amherst keeper to make it 3-1.
In the waning minutes of the half, Mammoths' forward Andrew Barkidijia would re-extend the lead to three with a goal that was assisted by Adrian Trott.
The Scarlet and Brown would once again make it a two-goal game at the 8:04 mark of the second half.
Miles Levy had the ball just inside midfield and sent a pass down to
Michael McDougald, who played a wall pass back. The senior midfielder fired a long pass down the middle to Pijpers, who slid a shot to the far-right post to make it 4-2.
St. Lawrence desperately tried to get back into the game but none of their four shots found the twine as the time ran out.
Woelfinger made two saves in the St. Lawrence frame, while Bernie White stopped three for the Mammoths.
Amherst had a 22-10 edge in shots but just a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal in the contest. They also had six corners to the Saints' three.
