Saints Drop Pair to Bowdoin, Middlebury

The St. Lawrence University volleyball team traveled to Middlebury, Vt. on Saturday afternoon and lost to a pair of New England matchups 3-0.

St. Lawrence 0, Bowdoin 3 (20-25, 21-25, 9-25)
The opening set was close throughout, and after seven straight points for the Scarlet and Brown, including three straight Lainey Roman service aces, the Saints led 15-12. The Polar Bears responded with a few runs, and took the set 25-20.

The Saints led again midway through the second set, this time 16-11, but Bowdoin tied the set at 16. The teams were level on points four more times in the set, but Bowdoin scored the final five points to win 25-21.

Bowdoin continued that run and jumped to a 6-0 lead in the third set. The Saints were not able to get their offense going and fell 25-9.

Julia Giroux finished with 11 kills in the first match, and Roman had five aces for the second time this season. Mattie Porter had 17 assists.

St. Lawrence 0, Middlebury 3 (7-25, 17-25, 9-25)
Middlebury used early runs in each of the three sets to put the Saints on their heels. In the first set they scored the first four points, and 10 of the first 12. The took the set win 25-7.

In the second set, after the Saints scored the first two points, the Panthers scored 13 of the next 14 points. St. Lawrence did put together three runs of three or more points, but Middlebury's lead was too great and won 25-17.

In the final set of the day, with Middlebury ahead 5-4, the Panthers scored 10-straight, and would go on to win 25-9.

Vivian Zymeck led the offense with five kills, and Lily Snide had 10 assists. Roman had nine digs, and Giroux added eight.

"We knew that both opponents today were going to bring a high quality game to the court and they certainly did. We did some good things against Bowdoin at times but we struggled to put together three quality contacts simultaneously. We will spend the week regrouping, resting, and recovering, and get ready for two critical Liberty League road matches next weekend."
