Fifty-nine minutes and 59 seconds of hockey was played scoreless until captain
Julia Gosling deked around the defense and put home the game-winner to lead the St. Lawrence women's hockey team to a 1-0 victory over the Union Dutchwomen on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Union came out strong in the first period. They had multiple sustained possessions in St. Lawrence's defensive zone, but Saints' goaltender
Lucy Morgan stood tall to keep the game scoreless.
Morgan made a beautiful pad save on a two-on-one break with just under four minutes remaining in the period.
The Dutchmen outshot SLU eight to six after the first period.
The Saints had a better start to the middle frame, trading chances with Union.
Seven minutes into the period,
Taylor Lum was almost rewarded for great forechecking efforts but her shot rang off the post.
The game remained scoreless after two periods of strong goaltending by Morgan and Union's Sophie Matsoukas.
SLU took control of pace of the game in the final period. They used their speed to gain territorial advantage to pin Union in their defensive zone.
For almost the entirety of the period St. Lawrence could not capitalize on their sustained pressure. Matsoukas made multiple phenomenal saves. Late in the period, on the Saints third powerplay of the game, she slid backdoor to rob Gosling, and then gobbled the rebound.
Matsoukas' play made the game seem destined for overtime, but Gosling had other plans.
With five seconds remaining,
Anna Segedi won a battle in the corner and chipped it over to Gosling, who maneuvered around a Union defender and deked out Mastoukas.
"It was an electric feeling scoring that goal with one second remaining," said Gosling. "This was a huge win for our team because we never gave up. I think in the end we were meant to win that game."
Abby Hustler and Segedi were credited with the assists on the goal.
"Union played great and outworked us for the better part of the first period, but we found our stride in the second and third," added head coach
Chris Wells. "Sophie Matsoukas made some fabulous saves, and Lucy was up to the task to keep the game scoreless. We dug deep and found a way to get the three points! We haven't had a goal with that much excitement in a long time."
Morgan finished the game with 26 saves for her second consecutive shutout. Matsoukas was great in net, finishing with 35 saves.
The Scarlet and Brown earned a weekend sweep to give them six points in the ECAC standings, and improved to 6-4-0 and 2-0-0 with the win, while Union fell to 3-6-0 and 0-2-0.
"We got to ring the bell after this weekend's sweep and this was a great start to ECAC play," Gosling finished.
