Emma Reynolds scored her third goal of the season, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Clarkson University at Hantz Field on Tuesday night.
The Saints saw their record fall to 6-6-2 with the loss and are 2-5-1 in Liberty League play, while the Knights improved to 9-5-2 and 4-3-1 in league play.
"We've improved little by little here and there but we're lacking on some details and over time they have stacked up against us," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "There's no question that there's a lot of effort and heart on this team but we have to figure out our identity as we move forward and decide how we want to embody that in future games and seasons."
The scoring started early in the contest, as Clarkson broke the score at the 7:35 mark of the first half. Chloe Hodge found her teammate Emily Colby, who beat
Keely Snode with a hard shot to make it 1-0.
The Scarlet and Brown struck back less than five minutes later, as
Meredith Donahue sent a perfect cross into Reynolds, who buried the ball past Molly DiCaprio to equalize the contest. The goal was the third of the season for the junior, who now is tied with Donahue for the most goals on the season for the Saints.
St. Lawrence nearly took the lead later in the half off the foot of
Mia Cence, who saw her long shot go off the crossbar keeping the game tied at one.
The Saints continued to push in the second half as
Kaitlyn Barton, Reynolds and Donahue each had shots towards goal. Reynolds shot was the only one to hit the frame as it was turned aside by DiCaprio.
The game-deciding goal eventually came off the head of a Golden Knight in the 72nd minute as a corner kick from Chloe Hodge was headed home by Emily Davis to give Clarkson the lead for good.
Snode had five saves in net for St. Lawrence in the game, while DiCaprio stopped one of the two shots to find the woodwork.
Clarkson led 13-8 in shots and 7-2 in shots on goal.
The Saints will hit the road this weekend for the final game of their regular season. On Saturday, St. Lawrence will line up against William Smith in a 2:00 p.m. match in Geneva.
