Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Honors Class of 2023; Fall 2-0 To Skidmore

The Saints held a 10-7 advantage in shots and generated lots of great scoring chances, but the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team ultimately fell 2-0 to Skidmore College in a hard-fought match on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.

St. Lawrence fell to 6-5-2 with the loss and 2-4-1 in Liberty League play, while Skidmore improved to 8-2-3, and 3-1-3 in league play.

"So proud of this team, they deserve so much more," said head coach Sinead McSharry "Playing out of their mind with 10 women and possessing the way they did is an accomplishment in of itself. The ball isn't finding the back of the net this season but it's there and we have to believe that it's all for a reason we know nothing about yet."

Before today's contest the St. Lawrence University women's soccer program honored the six members of the 2023 senior class. The six members of the senior class were team captain Tyler Potter, team captain Elyse Jackson, Erin O'Brien, Sam Cohen, Anya Found, and team manager Ella Moore.

The Thoroughbreds wasted little time breaking the tie scoring 3:29 into the game. Kyra Russman-Araya had the ball in the Skidmore end and fired a perfect through-ball down the field towards Kat Dunn. Dunn raced down the middle of the pitch and was one-on-one with Keely Snode. Dunn was able to chip the ball over Snode to put the Thoroughbreds up 1-0.

The Saints' offense responded well as they were able to generate good looks. Meredith Donahue had two shots that were saved and sailed wide which kickstarted their offensive effort. Emma Reynolds, Mia Cence, and Tyler Potter each had great looks on goal in the remainder of the half but were unable to get a ball past Claire Wolgast as the game went to 1-0 after 45.

St. Lawrence carried the pressure into the second half where Donahue, Alyvia Ronning, and Lily Pleau all had chances early. Pleau's chance nearly found paydirt as she headed a cross off the Skidmore post to keep the game at 1-0. The Saints would get the next three shots in the game as they searched for an equalizer.

Instead, Skidmore doubled their lead with just 24 minutes to go. Kat Dunn scored her second goal of the game after intercepting a ball and burying it in the net to put Skidmore up 2-0.

The Scarlet and Brown kept churning for a goal to get back into the game and had an excellent chance with five minutes left. Following a Skidmore foul in the box, Reynolds lined up for a penalty kick that was stopped by Wolgast.

Snode stopped five shots in the contest, while Wolgast made 10 saves in the Skidmore goal.

Despite the score, the Saints dominated possession for long periods and held a 22-15 edge in shots and a 10-7 advantage in shots on frame. Each team had three corner kicks.

The Scarlet and Brown, who sit three points behind Clarkson for sixth place in the Liberty League standings, will have a chance to catch their Route 11 rivals this coming Tuesday October 25 as the Saints travel to Hantz Field for a matchup with the Golden Knights.
