Anna Coyne scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year to give the Saints a 1-0 lead at the half, but a four goal second half from RPI sent the St. Lawrence University field hockey team to a 4-1 loss on Friday afternoon to the Engineers.
The Scarlet and Brown had the better of the Engineers in the first half outshooting the home team 10-7 and 3-1 in shots on goal.
Things turned in favor of the Saints at the 12:15 mark as the team blasted RPI with six shots. Coyne and
Ava Hartley began the onslaught with great looks that were turned away by Sarah Nace. Coyne ended the attack putting away a Hartley missed shot to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.
RPI began to turn things around after the half scoring twice in the first 9:05. Delana Bonci knotted up the game with a goal, before Rachel Banister gave the Engineers the 2-1 lead.
Before the Saints could get off another look RPI doubled their lead with a goal by Brianna Duba to make it 3-1. The Saints had a look in the final minute of the third, but her shot was blocked away by the RPI defense.
The Scarlet and Brown went on the offensive in the fourth getting shots from Coyne, and
Suzanne L'Hommedieu, but it was the Engineers that would strike for an insurance marker as Rachel Banister put her team up 4-1 at the 56:00 mark.
The Saints and Engineers finished tied at 15 shots apiece, while RPI held the slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
Lucy Adiutori stopped one shot in the St. Lawrence net, while Nace made three saves.
Head coach Fran Grembowicz
"We came out strong and played a strong first half. Our passing game looked good today, but we had trouble executing in the circles."
