Michael McDougald scored a goal in the opening 14 seconds of the contest, but the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team eventually settled for a 1-1 tie against Vassar College at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet and Brown went to 8-1-5 on the year and 4-0-3 in Liberty League play, while the Brewers saw their record go to 7-3-3, and 3-0-3 in conference play.
"Definitely had a playoff-type of feel to the game today," said head coach
Mike Toshack "It was a top of the table clash against former assistant coach Jon Hood, so it was a big day. I'm so proud of my team, they played well, and really hard, they showed what they can do. We're a little disappointed, at the end there were a couple things that didn't go our way, but we created chances to win the match and that's all you can ask."
The Saints got off to a red-hot start scoring just 14 seconds into the contest. St. Lawrence's leading scorer
Sam Pijpers showed off his playmaking prowess finding McDougald free in front of the Brewers' net. The junior buried the chance to put the Saints up 1-0. The 14-second strike was three seconds short of the fastest goal in program history set by Manny Brito, who scored in the opening 11 seconds against Cortland in 1996.
Vassar found an equalizer later in the half as a series of corner kicks from Owen Fauth eventually hit the mark as Ryan Lane got a head on a ball from the Brewers' captain and past
Ben Woelfinger to tie up the contest.
The game was very tactical from then on as both teams struggled to generate offensive chances in bunches.
The Scarlet and Brown created numerous chances to score down the stretch. Pijpers nearly scored his tenth of the year at the 78:47 mark as he struck a
Marvin Sibanda feed off the cross bar. Minutes later, Sibanda had a grade-A chance for himself as the senior had an open look in front of Eric Wnorowski but sailed the kick just high.
In the waning minutes it looked if the Saints were going to receive the golden chance they were waiting for as a St. Lawrence player was hauled down in the box and the ref pointed to the line. After an officials meeting with the sideline official from the far side, the call was reversed and the Saints offered a corner kick instead as the game fell to a draw.
Vassar held a narrow 13-10 edge in shots and an even narrower 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Brewers had eight corners to the Saints' two.
The Scarlet and Brown will take off next Saturday, October 22 to take on Skidmore College in their last road game of the regular season.
