Marco Wong scored the game's opening goal, and
Sam Pijpers scored the next two as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team defeated Bard 3-2 on Friday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 8-1-4 with the win and remain unbeaten in Liberty League play at 4-0-2. Bard fell to 4-6-1 on the year and 0-5-0 in conference play.
The Saints wasted no time getting on the scoresheet going up 1-0 just 2:25 into the game.
Miles Levy took a pass at the top of the Bard box and settled the play. The captain dished a pass off to Wong, who buried a shot past the Raptors' Walker Schwabauer.
At the 23:34 mark, St. Lawrence doubled their lead off the foot of
Sam Pijpers.
Kyle Graber was down the right side of the pitch and played a ball to the middle of the box. Levy faked a kick and let the ball pass through to Pijpers, who fired home the feed to doubled the lead to 2-0.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Pijpers tripled the lead for the Saints.
Max Mogul forced a turnover in Bard territory and fed a ball to Levy. Levy heard his teammate calling for the ball and sent a pass in towards the junior forward. The pass was deflected by a Raptor defender right to Pijpers, who fired home his second of the day.
Minutes later, Bard got back to within two with a goal of their own. Isaiah Ortiz received a long pass and headed the ball towards the Saints' goal. Ben Steketee was at the right place at the right time as he punched the ball home to make it a 3-1 game.
Bard then got within a goal late as the Raptors scored with 4:59 remaining in the game. Bard's Nick Agugliaro was able to put a point-blank shot on frame but was stopped by
George Charalambous. However, the rebound fell to Robbie Boyd, who tapped the ball into the unattended goal to make it a 3-2 game.
That was as close as Bard would get as the Saints stuffed the Raptors in the final five minutes.
Charalambous stopped five shots in the win, while Schwabauer saved seven of the ten shots he faced.
The Scarlet and Brown outshot Bard 21-10 overall and 10-8 in shots on goal. The Saints also led in corner kicks 6-1.
St. Lawrence will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as the Saints host Vassar, who sits three points behind the Scarlet and Brown in the Liberty League standings.
