The St. Lawrence men's basketball team lost to Vassar 68-63 on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as the Brewers stay undefeated in Liberty League play.
Trent Adamson had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Saints, and
Will Engelhardt added 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Saints jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first half. They shot 46-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, and led 30-21 at halftime.
St. Lawrence came out of the break and quickly extended its lead to 13, but Vassar chipped away at the score. With less than nine minutes left to play, the Brewers finally tied the game at 50, and a few minutes later they got their first lead at 54-52.
The teams went back-and-forth for the next few minutes with the Brewers controlling the score, but never able to make it more than a two-possession game.
With 80 seconds to go,
Gavin Macaulay scored a fast break layup and hit the free throw to bring the score to 64-62 in favor of the brewers. The Saints got a defensive stop, and Aidan Macaulay got an offensive rebound and was sent to the line on the put back. He hit one of two to make it a one-point game.
After failing to get a steal out of the full court press, the Saints sent Avni Mustafaj to the line, who hit both. The Saints came out of a timeout with 20 seconds left, but could not get a clean look to tie the game. Instead, they forced a contested 3-pointer that fell short, and Vassar sealed the game with a pair of free throws.
"We got out to an early lead, but they adjusted well after halftime," said coach
Marques Charlton. "I'm really proud of our effort, and we'll bounce back and focus for next week."
Jack Rothenberg led the Brewers with 21 points, and Zach Johnson had a 19 point, 11 rebound double-double.
The Saints shot 44-percent from the field. They held Vassar to just 30-percent shooting in the first half, but Vassar connected on 64-percent during their 47-point second half.
The Brewers out-rebounded the Saints 37-31. They also hit 10 of their 11 free throws, while the Saints shot 13 of 20 from the stripe.
