Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Skating Saints' Leadership Powers 3-1 Win Over Dartmouth

Skating Saints' senior captains Kaden Pickering and David Jankowski had a goal and assist each, and Justin Paul put the game out of reach late in the third as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team earned a 3-1 win over Dartmouth College on Saturday night at Thompson Arena in Hanover, N.H.

St. Lawrence improved to 6-12-4 overall and 4-6-2 in the ECAC with the win, while the Big Green fell to 3-11-2, and 2-7-1.

"It was a much better start for us tonight, which had been costly the last two games," said Charles W. Appleton Head Men's Hockey Coach Brent Brekke "We did a good job in the last ten minutes to withstand their push, and Zetts made a couple of timely saves when they had their goalie pulled and an extra attacker on. The win gives us good momentum heading into our rivalry series next weekend"

The Skating Saints wasted little time opening the games' scoring with a goal less than two minutes into the game. While in the Big Green zone, an errant pass sent the puck into the neutral zone and onto the stick of Mason Waite. The defender found  Chris Pappas, who made a lateral pass to Jankowski. The senior froze the Dartmouth defender and gave the puck to Pickering, who had an open look on net. The senior ripped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Justin Ferguson and in to give the Scarlet and Brown the 1-0 lead.

Puck possession and territory was at a premium in a first period that saw just nine shots on goal, six for the Saints and three for Dartmouth.

The Big Green nearly tied the contest early in the second period when Dartmouth caught the Saints on a change. Dartmouth carried a three-on-one into the St. Lawrence zone and Jack Cameron was fed a pass right in front of the St. Lawrence goal. Emil Zetterquist came up big turning the dangerous shot away to keep it a 1-0 game.

The Saints doubled their lead with six minutes and 13 seconds left in the middle frame. Assistant captain Tim Makowski started the scoring play with an outlet pass to Cameron Buhl at the blueline. The junior was met with resistance on the boards, but was able to chip the puck up to start a two-on-one bid. Pickering carried the puck into the Dartmouth zone and hit the brakes, sending the Big Green defender to the ice. The senior then found Jankowski wide open in front and the captain roofed it home to give the Saints the 2-1 lead.

The goal was the first for Jankowski since scoring the overtime game-winner against Quinnipiac in the ECAC Championship a season ago.

Dartmouth's Ian Pierce was given a five-minute major for contact to the head late in the second period, which nearly led to a three-goal lead for St. Lawrence. Tucker McIntosh carried the puck into the zone and was played by three of the four Dartmouth penalty killers. The sophomore took the hit and dished it forward to Paul, who was all alone. Paul was denied by Ferguson, who had to making a sprawling save right after to keep it a 2-0 game as Ty Naaykens was back door for the rebound.

The Big Green would cut the St. Lawrence lead in half six minutes into the third off a power play goal. Scott Chisholm took the puck off the side boards and weaved through the Saints defense towards the goal. Chisholm had all eyes on him as he found a wide-open Matt Hubbarde in front, who scored to make the score 2-1.

After tallying just seven shots in the first two periods, Dartmouth had 14 in the third in search of the game-tying goal.

Zetterquist and the Scarlet and Brown weathered the storm and got their third goal of the game with 3:01 left in regulation. At the Saints' blueline, Max Dorrington caused a turnover that came to Waite. The first-year chipped the puck off the glass and out to Paul, who found himself on the breakaway. Paul's shot was initially stopped by Ferguson, but trickled over the line to give the Saints the 3-1 edge.

Zetterquist stopped 20 shots in the Saints' win, while Ferguson made 19 saves in the loss.

The Saints went 0-for-2 in their power play chances, while the Big green scored on one of their two chances.

The Skating Saints will head home from New England and start preparing for their home-and-home series against Clarkson next weekend. On Friday, January 28, the Saints will make the short trek up Route 11 to Cheel Arena to take on the Knights at 7:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, St. Lawrence will play host to Clarkson at Appleton Arena at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the series.
