Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Saints Edged Out by RIT

The St. Lawrence men's basketball team lost on a last second fade away on Friday night against RIT in Burkman Gymnasium.

Will Engelhardt hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to tie the game at 58, but RIT went the length of the court and hit a contested shot from the short corner to secure the win.

The Saints led at the break 30-28, and scored the first four points of the second half, punctuated by a Trent Adamson dunk, to jump out to a six-point lead. The Tigers clawed back, scoring the next five. The second half would continue in a similar fashion, one team making a run, the other responding.

With under two minutes to go Carter Storey hit a free throw to put the Saints up 55-54. On the other end of the court Kevin Ryan hit a pair of free throws to retake the lead. A Trey Syroka free throw evened things again.

With 28 seconds to go Ryan hit a layup through contact to put RIT up two, and was sent to the line. Ryan, who was a perfect 8-8 from the stripe so far, missed the free throw which gave the Saints a chance to tie it. Will Engelhardt got the ball on the wing and drove to the hoop. He could not get the layup to fall, but was fouled and connected on both.

Matt Caggiano, who had not made a field goal all game, sunk the tough shot with under a second to go to win it for the Tigers.

"We had some good chances tonight," said head coach Chris Downs. "We missed some free throws, some open shots, and a few layups that could have affected the outcome. We are still working through our lapses in execution at critical times."

Ryan had 14 points, eight from the free throw line, to lead RIT. Kenny Wilburn and Chase Lewis had 12 and 11, respectively, off the bench. The Tigers got 32 points from the bench, compared to St. Lawrence's 11.

Engelhardt had 20, including four from deep. Adamson had a 10 point 13 rebound double-double. Carter Storey came off the bench and hit both of the 3-pointers he shot on his way to seven points. Trey Syroka had seven as well.
