Miles Levy broke the 0-0 draw in the second half and
George Charalambous recorded his first career shutout to lead the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon at the SUNY Canton Turf Field.
St. Lawrence improved to 3-0-0 on the season, while the Roos fell to 1-1-0.
The first half of the game was a defensive battle that saw both teams generate only one shot on goal apiece. Even though only one shot reached the frame, the Saints were able to generate most of the offense getting five shots off.
Just nine minutes into the game, the Scarlet and Brown almost broke the tie. First-year forward
Max Mogul raced down the right side of the pitch and fired a cross in on Canton's Owen Kwong. The ball ended up hitting the cross bar, then ping-ponged onto the chest of
Michael McDougald. McDougald settled the ball right in front of the keeper but misfired it high to keep the game at 0-0.
The lone goal of the game came with 32:56 left in the second half from the foot of Levy, off a beautiful series of passes. At the midfield line,
Sam Peacock had a Saints throw in and launched the ball into the Roos' defensive zone. The throw connected with
Robert Reynolds, who flicked the ball off his head right to Levy who was making a run for the goal. Levy settled the ball off his chest, outraced a defender, and fired the ball short side past Kwong to give the Scarlet and Brown the 1-0 advantage. Reynolds and Peacock both earned an assist on the play.
Charalambous and the St. Lawrence defense had to stave off some last-minute SUNY Canton chances to hold the one-goal advantage. With 3:22 left in regulation Roos' midfielder Ellis Sanchez had a free kick outside of the box, but fired the ball just high and outside of the frame. Moments later, the home team made a run down the field and sent a dangerous cross to the far post. The ball nearly connected with a Canton foot, but ended up rolling harmlessly into the sidelines, preserving the lead.
Charalambous was perfect in his Saints' debut stopping all three shots that found the net, while Kwong finished with two saves for Canton.
St. Lawrence finished with a 9-4 shots advantage and held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Saints ended up with one corner kick late in regulation, while the Roos had three in the second half.
The Scarlet and Brown will hit the road this weekend and take part in the Oneonta Tournament. The Saints will take on Hartwick College on Saturday, September 11 at 4 p.m. before facing SUNY Oneonta on their home field on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
