Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Saints Drop 1-0 Decision Against Hartwick

The Saints' offense came up just short as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team fell to Hartwick College 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in their first game of the Oneonta Tournament at Elmore Field.

St. Lawrence moved to 3-1-0 on the season, while Hartwick improved to 3-1-0.

The Saints had most of the offensive chances early as Robert Reynolds nearly put them on the board first. During a 1:35-second stretch early in the half, the Scarlet and Brown were awarded three corner kicks. As a result, Reynolds was able to get two shots off, but they sailed high of goalkeeper Jodi Johnson to keep the game even.

It was Hartwick that would ultimately end up breaking the tie at the 22:20 mark. The Hawks' Jake Zona had a good look on the Saints' goal, but was turned away by the defensive line. However, the ball bounced outside of the box and onto the foot of Matteo Sweet, who ripped a shot past Ben Woelfinger to take the 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence held a 7-5 advantage in shots in the first half, but Hartwick had the edge in shots on goal at 3-1. The Scarlet and Brown had seven corner kicks in the first half to the Hawks' one.

The Saints' defense clamped down in a big way in the second half allowing zero shots to get through to Woelfinger in the net. Unfortunately, the Hartwick defense was just as stingy allowing just one to find Johnson.

The lone shot in the second half came from the head of Andrew Terhune. Terhune was able to connect on a header with less than 24 minutes remaining, but was turned away by Johnson to preserve the narrow lead.

The Scarlet and Brown kept the fight going until the end, but were unable to find the frame as all their shots went high, wide, or were blocked by the Hawks' defense.

Woelfinger and Johnson both finished the contest with two saves apiece in the defensive battle.

St. Lawrence finished with the narrow 11-10 lead in shots, while Hartwick held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The Saints had eight corner kicks, while the Hawks had two.

The Scarlet and Brown will take on SUNY Oneonta in their second game of the Oneonta Tournament on Sunday, September 12th at 3:30 p.m.
