Andrew Terhune and the Saints' offense got off to a hot start, but it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team lost 2-1 to SUNY Oneonta on Sunday afternoon from Red Dragon Field in the Oneonta Tournament.
The Saints moved to 3-2 on the season, while the Red Dragons improved to 3-0-1.
"Although the result wasn't in our favor, I'm very proud of the effort put in on both sides of the ball." said assistant coach
Tyler Gallagher "SUNY Oneonta was a very well-coached team and we fought hard for 90 minutes. We're looking forward to heading back to Sandy MacAllaster Field next weekend to take on SUNY Potsdam"
Just 2:34 into regulation, the Saints had a great look on goal after a
Miles Levy corner kick. Following the corner kick,
Robert Reynolds was able to rise above the defense and head the ball through traffic and onto the goal. Nate Hanna made the save to keep the Saints off the board.
Moments later, Terhune got on the board for the Scarlet and Brown. Reynolds received possession of the ball just outside of the box, but was under heavy pressure and was knocked down by a defender. He sprung back up and sent a through ball to Terhune, who was all alone and beat Hanna for the 1-0 lead.
Just under two minutes later, the Red Dragons struck back to tie the game. Oneonta's Jeremy Pantoni played some give-and-go with Lucas Fecci after getting the ball from him on the rush. Pantoni found Fecci down the left side, where he beat Saints' goalkeeper
Ben Woelfinger to knot the game up at 1-1.
With 18:38 left in regulation, the Red Dragons took a one-goal lead off a long-distance free kick. Ian Zingaro was given a free kick off a St. Lawrence foul and made the most of it by firing the ball in towards Matt Howe, who capitalized giving Oneonta a  2-1 lead and the win.
Woelfinger finished the game with four saves, while Hanna stopped two shots on the day.
The Red Dragons finished the game with a 16-9 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Oneonta had nine corner kicks, while the Saints had two.
Captains
Quinn Houseman and
Robert Reynolds were both named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field next Saturday, September 18th at 1:00 p.m. to take on SUNY Potsdam.
