Robert Reynolds scored the late game-winner, and
Ben Woelfinger pitched his second shutout of the season to propel the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Saints improved to 4-2-0 on the season, while the Bears fell to 1-3-2.
"The guys showed a lot of resilience today by building upon a great game against Oneonta last weekend in which we didn't come away with the win," said head coach
Mike Toshack "The response today from the team was excellent, creating 19 shots and numerous scoring chances. Despite not finding the net early, they kept at it until they found the game-winner. Potsdam was extremely well organized and a well-coached team. We were pleased with the result and now we turn our focus to Tuesday when we take on SUNY Cortland."
The Scarlet and Brown got to work early in the game setting the pace offensively. Senior
Da'Vaughn Anderson was active early generating two shots in the first six minutes. Anderson was blocked on his first attempt, but found the frame on the second, only to be turned away by Potsdam's Conor Callan.
One of the best opportunities of the half came with 26:09 remaining in the first half. Following a Bears foul, St. Lawrence was given a free-kick deep in Potsdam territory. The kick was taken by
Michael McDougald, who missed the frame just high, keeping the score tied at zero.
St. Lawrence and Potsdam were only able to find the frame two times apiece in the second half, but the attempts for the Saints were dangerous.
Marvin Sibanda, who had a game-high seven shots in his return to Sandy MacAllaster Field, was especially threatening and nearly put the Saints on the board in the second half. With 32:40 left in regulation, the ball found its way to the foot of Sibanda, who found open space in the box and ripped at a shot on goal that hit the post, nearly giving the Scarlet and Brown the edge.
Sibanda was not done creating offense, and as the game entered the final minutes, he set up the game-winning goal. With less than five minutes to go, Reynolds forced a Bears' turnover deep in their territory and the ball once again found Sibanda in scoring territory. Sibanda took a shot that was blocked and landed on the foot of Reynolds, who was wide open in the box. Reynolds beat Callan for his third goal of the year and gave the Saints the deciding goal it needed. Â
Woelfinger finished the game with three saves in the shutout, while Callan stopped three of his own for Potsdam.
The Scarlet and Brown finished with the 19-8 edge in shots, and a narrow 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams were given three corner kicks in the game.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field this coming Tuesday, September 21st for a matchup against SUNY Cortland. The match is set for 4:00 p.m.
