Duun Cocozza O'Hara scored the game-winning goal, and assisted on two others, to propel the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over New England College at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Sunday afternoon.
St. Lawrence improved to 3-0-0 on the season, while the Pilgrims fell to 0-3-0.
With the win, the Scarlet and Brown swept the North Country Classic.
"We were very pleased with this weekend's performances on and off the field." said head coach
Sinead McSharry "We're looking forward to a week of recovery and improving before our next contest. We would like to thank Stevens and New England College for making the trip up to the North Country Classic, and we wish them the best of luck the rest of the way!"
The Saints came out firing in the first half to the tune of 21 shots, with ten shots on goal, but were unable to get on the board. Emily Sashko was able to make all ten stops for the Pilgrims to keep the Scarlet and Brown off the scoreboard.
Keely Snode started the game and stopped both shots she faced in the first half. Snode was replaced at the half by
Darcie McDonough. Snode improved her shutout streak to 180 minutes to start her Saints career in today's outing.
New England College was unable to hold the Saints forever as O'Hara got the offense rolling just 43 seconds into the second half. O'Hara was point-blank in front of the net when
Grace Mochnal fed a short pass into her feet for her first career assist. She settled the ball and fired it past Sashko to take the 1-0 lead.
Just 28 seconds later, O'Hara beat the Pilgrims defender down the right side of the field and found
Isabel Silvia in front of the net. She received the pass and hammered home the one-timer finish to improve the lead to 2-0.
Natalie Schock was next in line for an O'Hara centering pass with 27:34 left in the half. This time around O'Hara worked her way down the left side against two defenders and launched a long pass from the corner and into the box where Schock was waiting for the one-touch finish.
The final of the Saints' four goals came from the foot of
Tyler Potter who received a perfect pass from
Emma Reynolds. Reynolds was on the chase with Potter down the right side of the field and sent a perfect through-ball to Potter, who was able to gain a step on the defense. Potter ripped the ball past Sashko to put the score to 4-0.
Saints' goalkeeper McDonough, who came in relief of Snode, came away with no saves, but got the win. The Saints' defense stopped the Pilgrims from gaining any traction in the second half allowing just two shots. Sashko made 13 saves for New England College in 90 minutes of action.Â
The Saints outshot the Pilgrims 38-5 in total and 17-2 in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown had six corner kicks to New England College's two.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field next weekend to take on Nazareth College on Saturday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m.
