Keely Snode stopped 12 shots and extended her shutout streak to 290 minutes as the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team fought to a 0-0 tie with Nazareth College on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster field.
St. Lawrence moved to 3-0-1 on the season, while the Golden Flyers stay winless at 0-2-2.
"Our team showed alot of resilience to finish out a tough game." said head coach
Sinead McSharry "Considering we didn't play up to our standard, it was good to see the team battle until the end."Â
The beginning of the first half was all Purple and Gold, as the Golden Flyers came out firing. Nazareth registered the first seven shots of the game, but Snode was up to the task stopping four shots in the first 12:40 of the game. The biggest of them all came 11:58 into the half when McKayla Hughes had a look from point-blank range but was turned aside.
The Saints would stabilize the effort and play the remainder of the half more even. St. Lawrence was finally able to get some pressure on Nazareth's Annika Monfort, generating four shots in the half.
The Golden Flyers outshot the Saints 11-4 in the first half and 5-2 in shots on goal.
The Scarlet and Brown defense had to endure another offensive attack early in the second half as Nazareth had six shots and four corner kicks in a 12-minute stretch. The Saints' defense and Snode were able to keep them off the board by pressuring the Golden Flyers into firing wide on most of their looks.
The Saints nearly had the goal both teams were looking for with 21 minutes remaining in regulation.
Hope Donoghue subbed into the game with 21:23 left to play and was put right into the action. Just 24 seconds after subbing in, Donoghue was fed a perfect through-ball and fired a left-footed shot onto the Nazareth goal, but was turned aside by Monfort.
The first overtime period was played slowly with both teams generating just one shot on goal apiece. The second overtime period was a different story, as the Golden Flyers made one last push for a deciding goal outshooting the Scarlet and Brown 5-1.
With 6:50 remaining in the second overtime, Snode made the save of the game. Caleigh Cahoon was given a corner kick for the Golden Flyers and made the most of it by firing a ball right to Hughes. Hughes was all alone in the box and kicked the ball out of the air and straight on the frame. Snode stood tall in the net making the save to preserve the tie.
For the fourth game in a row, Snode was perfect in net stopping 12 shots, and posted her second solo shutout of the year to go along with a combined shutout. Monfort was also strong in net for the Golden Flyers stopping seven shots of her own for her second shutout of the season.
Nazareth finished with a 30-11 advantage in shots and 12-7 in shots on goal. The Golden Flyers had 15 corner kicks to the Saints' three.
The Scarlet and Brown will now go on to play their first road games of the season as they open Liberty League play. The three-game road stretch will begin Saturday, September 18Â in Troy, New York, where they will take on RPI at 3 p.m.
