Tyler Potter scored her third goal of the season 3:18 into regulation, but a late RPI goal pushed the 21st-ranked St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 1-1 tie in its Liberty League opener in Troy, N.Y. The game was called off with 6:06 remaining after a one-hour weather delay, due to lightning within six miles of the game.
The Saints remained undefeated at 3-0-2 and are now 0-0-1 in conference play. The Engineers moved to 2-1-3 and 0-0-1, respectively.
"We showed some growth from our last game," said head coach
Sinead McSharry. "We had good pockets of possession at times and fought hard. It was a strange ending to the day, but we are looking forward to being back on the training field on Monday."
The Saints struck first just 3:18 into the game off what seemed to be a harmless play.
Keely Snode scooped up the ball in the defensive zone and booted it away to midfield where she found
Isabel Silvia all alone. Silvia lobbed up a pass to the streaking Potter who one-touched the ball with her left foot towards the far side. The slower-paced ball confused the goalkeeper and ricocheted off the right post and in to put the Saints up 1-0 early in the contest.
The second half saw the Engineers going on the attack looking for an equalizing goal. The Engineers were able to generate six shots on goal in the second half, putting pressure on the Scarlet and Brown. Snode was excellent in net keeping the Engineers out of the net until late.
With 6:06 left in regulation, RPI knotted up the game on an extremely close call right in front of the St. Lawrence goal. Erin Barnes was running down the left side of the pitch and fired a cross into Whitney Wisnom, who headed the ball off the crossbar. At first glance it looked like the ball bounced down on the goal line and away from the goal, but the officials ruled that the ball crossed the goal line, giving the Engineers the equalizing goal they needed.
Before play could start back up after the goal, the game went into a weather delay after lightning was spotted north of Troy, N.Y. After a one-hour weather delay, and an expected restart, it was announced the game was announced over with 6:06 remaining on the clock. Because the game went at least 70 minutes, the game was made official and finished as a 1-1 draw.
The Engineers finished with the 17-7 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. RPI was given four corner kicks to the Saints' one.
Snode stopped six shots, but her shutout streak was ended after 373:53 of perfect play. Sierra Skelding finished with two saves for RPI.
The Scarlet and Brown will look to get back into the win column on the road next weekend. The Saints will travel to Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday, September 25th to take on Union at 3:00 pm. They will then make a two-hour trip north to Vermont to take on Middlebury College on Sunday, September 26th at 2:00 pm.
