Tyler Potter scored her team leading fourth goal of the season as the 23
rd-ranked St. Lawrence University women's soccer team defeated Union College 2-1 at College Park Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints remained undefeated at 4-0-2 and are 1-0-1 in Liberty League action. The Dutchwomen fell to 2-4-1 and 1-1-0 in conference play.
The Scarlet and Brown struck first in the game with a beautiful play at the 10:49 mark of the first half. Just before the play, Potter was taken down by a Union defender and the Saints were awarded a free-kick from long distance.
First-year defender
Jenna Durkin received her first career point in a Scarlet and Brown uniform, as she took the free-kick and fired a pass into the box and found the head of
Emma Reynolds in front of Union's Abby Mitty. The ball got past the goalkeeper for Reynolds' first career goal and Durkin's first assist.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Potter would put the team up 2-0 with a gorgeous goal. The Scarlet and Brown were given a corner kick to the right of the Dutchwomen's net as both teams crowded the box. Potter curled in the corner kick, but found the highlighter-yellow hand of Mitty. Fortunately, the ball deflected off the keeper's hand and inside the far post to give Potter her team-leading fourth goal of the year, and the team a 2-0 lead.
The Dutchwomen started to get some pressure and ended up finding their first of the game in the process. The ball was sent into the Saints' end and the defense attempted to head the ball out of harms way. However, the ball bounced around and found Lexi Cornacchia, who kicked the ball with the outside of her right foot to cut the lead in half.
Union kept pressing trying to knot up the game, but
Keely Snode and the St. Lawrence defense was up to the task. Snode faced three shots the rest of the way and turned aside two of them, while the third sailed high and right of the net, as the Scarlet and Brown secured the 2-1 win.
Snode stopped four saves in her second win of the season, while Mitty stopped four-of-six shots in the losing effort.
Union pulled ahead and finished with a 19-14 shots advantage, but the Saints found the net more frequently with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Dutchwomen had a 9-5 lead in corner kicks.
The Scarlet and Brown will head to Middlebury, Vt. tomorrow, September 26
th to face-off against Middlebury College at 2:00 p.m.
