Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

#23 Saints Lose 2-0 To Middlebury in Top-25 Matchup

The Saints lost their undefeated record, as the 23rd-ranked St. Lawrence University women's soccer team lost 2-0 to 22nd-ranked Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont on Sunday afternoon.

The Scarlet and Brown fell to 4-1-2 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 6-2-1.

"I'm sure the team is disappointed in the loss, but they should be proud of their performance this week," said head coach Sinead McSharry "That was a very good and relentless team, and we fought to the end. Our value this week was, 'Relentless' and the whole team embodied that all weekend long."

The first half of the contest was a field position battle that saw both teams get few shots. Middlebury was able to get three shots on net, but were turned away by Keely Snode and the Saints' defensive line.

St. Lawrence had just one shot in the first half, but it was a good opportunity. The Saints were given a free-kick from the left side of Panthers' goalkeeper Sydney Poppinga just outside the box. The ball was fired in and Hannah Dorfman got a head on the ball in scoring territory. However, the attempt was turned away, keeping the score at 0-0.

The tide turned dramatically in the second half with Middlebury generating 15 shots to the Saints' two. Eliza Van Voorhis scored an unassisted goal from ten yards above the box to put the Panthers up 1-0. With just over 12 minutes to play, Middlebury struck again, as Magnolia Moskun scored to put the score at 2-0.

Snode finished the game with six saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Poppinga stopped two shots in the shutout.

The Panthers finished the game with a 21-3 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in shots on goal. Middlebury had six corner kicks, while the Saints had two.

The Scarlet and Brown will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field next Saturday, October 2nd at 3:00 p.m. to take on Ithaca College in Liberty League play.
