Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

23rd-Ranked Saints Drop 1-0 Decision To Ithaca

Saints' goalkeeper Keely Snode stopped seven shots, but it was not enough, as the 23rd-ranked St. Lawrence University women's soccer team fell to Ithaca College 1-0 at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints fell to 4-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in Liberty League action, while the Bombers improved to 7-2-0 and 2-1-0 in conference play.

"I thought we were very unlucky today," said head coach Sinead McSharry "They got a goal on a ball that had eyes, but that's soccer. The whole team should be proud of their performance overall."

Despite the rainy conditions earlier in the day, the two teams played fast and generated 21 combined shots in the first half. St. Lawrence found the net three times in the first half but were turned aside each time by Claire Reader. Snode stopped five shots in the first half.

Ithaca held the 13-8 shots advantage at the half, and had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown earned four corner kicks in the half to the Bombers' two.

The Saints nearly had a goal with under 17 minutes in regulation off the head of Sam Cohen. Tyler Potter served a ball into the box and the ball bounced to the foot of Keelin Hurtt, who had her shot blocked. The ball bounced to Cohen, who got a head on the ball but was turned away by the goalkeeper.

The Scarlet and Brown kept the pressure up and at 15:23, Duun Cocozza O'Hara was given a free-kick off of a Bomber foul and ripped a shot onto Reader. Reader punched the ball away to keep the game at 0-0.

It was Ithaca that would find the only goal of the game with just over six minutes remaining in regulation. Alex Epifani brought the ball down the field and found an open Megan Buttinger in the box. Buttinger tossed a changeup on the Saints' goal that left the defense scrambling. The ball found its' way in for the game-winning tally.

Snode stopped seven shots in the effort, while Reader stopped six shots for Ithaca.

The Bombers outshot St. Lawrence 23-18 in total and 9-7 in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown had eight corner-kicks, while Ithaca had five.

The Scarlet and Brown will be back at home next Tuesday, October 5th to take on Clarkson University at 4:00 p.m.
