Tyler Potter scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, but the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in double-overtime to Clarkson at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Saints fell to 4-3-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in the Liberty League. The Knights moved to 3-4-2 and 1-1-2 in conference action.
"As I said to the team after the game, we worked hard but so too did the other team," said head coach
Sinead McSharry "We're not getting it done from a competitive standpoint, and that needs to change if we want to make a dent in this league."
The Golden Knights were the first to put a point on the board thirty-seven minutes and 14 seconds into the first half. Chloe Hodge played the ball down the right side and tried to get a ball through to the goal, only to be stopped by
Mia Cence. The ball took a bad bounce and landed on the foot of Angelina Fahrenkrug, who fired the ball from outside the box and into the top corner for the 1-0 lead.
With just under 34 minutes to go in the second half,
Erin O'Brien nearly tied up the contest.
Elyse Jackson lobbed a ball in towards the box and found O'Brien, who was making a run towards the goal. O'Brien beat the defender and ripped a right-footed shot that was caught by the sprawling Molly DiCaprio to keep the Saints off the board.
The Scarlet and Brown eventually found the equalizer they were looking for, as
Alyvia Ronning setup Potter for her team-high fifth goal of the season. Following a Cence free kick, the ball popped out to Ronning, who wisely put the ball back in towards the Knights' net. The ball found Potter, who got behind the defense and beat DiCaprio to knot the game up at 1-1.
Clarkson came away with a win off an own goal 2:34 into the second overtime period. Hodge found room down the right side of the field and put a shot on goal that was blocked. The ball came right back to her, and she played it back in looking for her teammate. A St. Lawrence defender tried to kick the ball out of harms way, but the ball spun off her leg and barely over the line to end the contest.
Keely Snode stopped nine shots in 102:34 of action, while DiCaprio made nine saves of her own for the Knights. Â
Clarkson had a 19-14 edge in shots and a 12-10 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints had zero corner kicks, while the Knights had five.
The Scarlet and Brown will go back on the road this weekend to take on RIT on Saturday, October 9
th at 3:00 p.m.
