Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Woelfinger, Reynolds Lead The Saints To 1-0 Win Over Geneseo

Ben Woelfinger posted his first shutout of the season, and senior Robert Reynolds scored the game-clinching goal with just 7:04 remaining in regulation to send the St. Lawrence University men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over SUNY Geneseo at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Sunday afternoon.

St. Lawrence improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while the Knights fell to 0-2-1.

With the win, the Scarlet and Brown swept the North Country Classic.

"A game like this today goes a long way to building the strength of your team," said head coach Mike Toshack "This one felt like a proper SUNYAC playoff game. They are a very well-coached team and came at us with tons of fight and energy. I am proud that our team matched that fight and energy for 90 minutes. Now we turn our attention to SUNY Canton and look to build and move forward with our season. On another note, after missing last season, it was a joy and pleasure to be back on Sandy MacAllaster Field doing what we love. This doesn't happen without the hard work and dedication of those behind the scenes that made it possible. A special thanks goes out to Brian Atkins and his staff."

The entire game today was a scrappy battle that yielded very few Grade-A scoring chances for either side.

One of those chances fell into the Saints' lap at the 22:06 mark of the first half. A penalty kick was granted in the Saints favor and Michael McDougald, who scored the game-winner yesterday, took the kick for the Scarlet and Brown, but was turned away by a great save by Will Price.

Geneseo nearly had a goal of their own with just under five minutes to go in the first half. Tyler Lewandowski made it through the Saints' defense, but was stopped in his tracks by the outstretched Woelfinger to keep the contest tied.

The Scarlet and Brown went on the counterattack getting a great opportunity moments later. Parker Hotchkiss was streaking down the left-hand side of the field with two defenders on his hip, but managed to get a great look on the goal. Hotchkiss was stopped by Price to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

With 24:03 left in regulation, Woelfinger kept the game tied with a sensational save. Stefen Nikolic received a pass from his teammate and pulled up from long range with a hard shot that was stopped by the diving Woelfinger who came out to challenge the Kinghts' effort.

The play of the game however came with 7:04 left in regulation. The Knights turned  the ball over deep in their zone and the ball wound up on the foot of Kyle Graber. Graber could not get a proper hit on the ball, but it spun forward to the foot of Reynolds who blasted it by Price for the game-winner that put St. Lawrence up 1-0.

Saints' goalkeeper Workfinger stopped all nine shots he faced, while Price made 5 saves for Geneseo.

The Knights outshot St. Lawrence 14-10 in total and held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Scarlet and Brown had seven corner kicks to Geneseo's four.

The Scarlet and Brown will head to SUNY Canton on Wednesday, September 8th for a matchup under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
