Keely Snode registered the first shutout of her career and Junior forward
Tyler Potter scored a sensational goal late in regulation to send the St. Lawrence women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Saturday afternoon.
St. Lawrence improved to 2-0-0 on the season, while Stevens fell to 0-1-0 in their opener.
"Superb performance against one of the best teams in the country." said head coach
Sinead McSharry "They were by far one of the hardest to play and most most talented teams this program has ever come across. It was incredibly exciting to see our team come together and play our game. Today we embodied our value, ' Relentless'."
The first half of the game was controlled by the visiting Ducks who held a decided 12-5 shot advantage. Saints' goalkeeper
Keely Snode was up to the task stopping every shot that came her way.
With 13:50 left in the first half, Stevens' forward Tia Saade got a step on the Saints' defense and had a grade-A chance on goal that was turned away by the awaiting Snode.
Snode finished the half with four saves while Izza DiDario made one. The Ducks and Saints each had one corner kick in the half.
St. Lawrence came out of halftime with a renewed energy and began to turn the tide generating six shots and holding Stevens to just five.
The Ducks nearly got on the board with 16 minutes remaining in regulation. Stevens was attacking and chased a through-ball into the Saints box. Snode came out of her net and stopped the effort before the forward could put a shot on the frame, upholding the tie.
With less than six minutes left in regulation, St. Lawrence was fouled and awarded a free-kick. For the second game in a row,
Mia Cence was allowed to let her boot shine and fired a ball into the Ducks box. The pass connected with Potter who kicked the ball out of the air and past DiDario to give the Scarlet and Brown 1-0 advantage and eventually the win.
Saint's goalkeeper Snode was stellar in net stopping six shots in 90 minutes of shutout ball, while DiDario made four saves for the Ducks.
Stevens outshot St. Lawrence 20-11 and had the 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Ducks had three corner kicks to the Saints one.
The Saints will be back at Sandy MacAllaster Field tomorrow to take on New England College in their second game of the North Country Classic at 1:00 p.m.
