Morgan Stops Career Best, Saints Skate to 2-2 Tie with #9/10 Penn State

Rachel Teslak and Rachel Bjorgan recorded their first goals of the season and Lucy Morgan made a career-best 39 saves, as the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with the No. 9/10 Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday night at Pegula Ice Area in University Park, Pennsylvania.

Early in the first period, Aly McLeod found Abby Hustler, who was able to feed Teslak at the point. Teslak fired the shot through traffic, putting the Saints up 1-0 with at the 14:49 mark.

After one, the Saints controlled the lead on the scoreboard, but the Nittany Lions held a 10-6 lead in shots on goal.

Off the faceoff, Rachel Bjorgan redirected a feed from Chloé Puddifant, giving the Scarlet and Brown a 2-0 just over two and a half minutes into the second period.

The Nittany Lions were quick to respond and close the gap to one as Karley Garcia sent a shot through traffic for the power play goal at 14:41 mark.

Just a few minutes later, Teslak nearly notched her second of the game after ringing a shot off the post with 11:58 to play.

Saints' goalkeeper Lucy Morgan kept the Saints in the lead with a save on a point-blank shot from Penn State's Olivia Wallin with just over four minutes to play, but it was the Nittany Lion's Natalie Heising, who evened the score with an unassisted tally from behind the net at the 15:53 mark of the third period. Penn State almost took the lead with a scramble off the faceoff, but Morgan and the Saints' defense were able to hold Penn State from a third straight goal.

With the Saints on the power play, Kristina Bahl nearly put St. Lawrence back in the lead, but rang a shot off the post, but Penn State was able to kill off the penalty.

After three periods of play, Penn State held a 37-16 lead in shots on goal.

Morgan made four saves in overtime, including fighting off a four-on-three power play for the final minute to keep the score tied. She finished with career-best 39 saves, while Penn State's Josie Bothun made 16.

"We had to really use all our energy to get the tie tonight," said head coach Chris Wells '92. "We blocked shots and Lucy was solid when we needed her. We will be able to build off this weekend playing a top-10 team on the road and coming away with a win and a tie. It's been an interesting month getting ready for this season and now that it's here we can have some fun!"

The Nittany Lions finished with a 39-16 advantage in shots and led 36-27 in the faceoff circle.

St. Lawrence moved to 1-0-1 on the season, while Penn State moved to 0-1-1.

The Saints will open their home season at Appleton Arena for a two-game series against Syracuse, next weekend October 1-2. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
