Haberl's Hat Trick Leads Saints Over Utica 4-3

Junior Mckenzie Haberl recorded a hat trick to lead the St. Lawrence University field hockey team to a 4-3 win over Utica College on Tuesday afternoon in Utica, New York.

Haberl tallied three goals including the game winner, while Anna Coyne added the fourth goal for the Scarlet and Brown. Maggie Green and Jenny L'Hommedieu both recorded assists in the win.

The Pioneers capitalized on a penalty corner six minutes into the game. Mackenzie Mix found Sydney Scaccia to take the early lead.

In the second quarter, Haberl evened the game. After forcing the goalie Megan Chamberlain make a few saves, Haberl finally found the back of the cage. A few minutes later, Green got her third assist of the year when she found Coyne, who slotted the ball past the keeper to take the lead.

Early in the second half, Haberl scored again to extend the lead to two. Utica was quick to respond, when Sabrina Whitehouse carried the ball down the left sideline, cut into the middle and was able to beat the goalie to get it within one.

Just before the end of the quarter, L'Hommedieu received a pass from Haberl off of a penalty corner. She sent the ball back to Haberl, who scored her third of the game.

The Pioneers kept the pressure up throughout the fourth quarter, and scored with less than three minutes left to make the score 4-3. The Saints' defense was able to hold off the late attack until the final whistle blew.

"I thought we played a smart game today and utilized our strengths," head coach Fran Grembowicz said. "We executed our game plan well, especially in the second half."

Haberl's eight goals and L'Hommedieu's five assists both currently lead the Liberty League.

Cara Vredenburg made five saves for the Saints in goal, while Megan Chamberlain made 12 saves for Utica.

The Saints improve to 5-2 on the season and the Pioneers fell to 3-4.

The Saints open league play when they host Skidmore for Family Weekend on North Country Field on September 25 at 2 p.m.
