The St. Lawrence University field hockey team fell to Hamilton College 4-1 on Thursday afternoon in Clinton, N.Y.
Hamilton started the first quarter strong, outshooting the Saints' 5-0.
The Continentals kept the pressure up throughout the second quarter. Just past the six-minute mark a shot deflected high into the air, and senior Lexi Takashima was able to knock it out of the air past a crowd of blue and white into the back of the cage.
The third quarter was all Hamilton. Less than five minutes into second half, the Continentals doubled their lead off of a penalty corner. After four short passes, Grace Chapis found Keeley Duran, who buried it into the corner. A few minutes later, another corner went Hamilton's way, this time Tracey Stafford was sitting on the far post and guided a deflected shot over the line to go up 3-0. Less than a minute later, Hannah Liebegott made it 4-0.
The Saints scored the only goal in the fourth quarter, when first year
Suzanne L'Hommedieu capitalized on some confusion in the circle and connected on a shot. It was her first goal at St. Lawrence, and
Maggie Green's second assist on the season.
"We knew Hamilton would be a tough opponent," head coach
Fran Grembowicz said. "Our defense in the first half held strong, and Hamilton's defense made it tough for us to string together our passes. We're looking forward to bouncing back next week."
Starting goalkeeper
Cara Vredenburg made nine saves for the Saints, and
Lucy Adiutori came in for the final quarter and made two stops.
Hamilton led in shots (24-2) and penalty corners (12-2).
