Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Jenny L'Hommedieu Leads Saints Past Manhattanville 5-3

Three second-half goals propelled the St. Lawrence field hockey team to a 5-3 victory against Manhattanville College on Sunday morning in Geneva, New York. The Saints improved their record to 4-1 with the victory, which is the program's best start since 2009.

"Another awesome finish," head coach Fran Grembowicz said. "We made a few changes to our game plan in the second half which helped us slow down their potent attack. We did a good job stopping the big hit in the second half along with a great passing game to help out points up on the board."

The Valiants struck first, scoring twice in the first quarter off of penalty corners. First-year Ciara Halloran scored her second of the year off of a penalty corner early in the second quarter to bring the game within one. Manhattanville brought the lead back to two shortly after when Kate Buckley dribbled in past a few defenders and shot the ball low from the left side for a 3-1 lead.

Late in the second quarter Mckenzie Haberl broke through the back line and found Jenny L'Hommedieu to knock it in for a 3-2 deficit going into halftime.

The second half was all St. Lawrence. Haberl and L'Hommedieu connected again early in the third, this time L'Hommedieu found Haberl, who evened the score at three, but the duo weren't done there. Two minutes later Haberl got her second assist of the game, and L'Hommedieu scored for the second time to take the 4-3 lead.

The Saints kept the pressure up, and had five penalty corners in the fourth quarter, scoring on the fifth. L'Hommedieu got her second assist of the game when she connected with Mary Clark, who scored her first goal of the season. That 5-3 lead remained until the final buzzer.

First-year goalkeeper Cara Vredenburg made four saves in her fourth career win.

Buckley, Charlotte Stanwood, and Raquel Brown scored for the Valiants, and Buckley and Abbey Playle recorded an assist each.

St. Lawrence finished with a 10-9 advantage in total shots, though Manhattanville had a 7-6 edge in shots on target. The Saints also took 11 penalty corners to the Valiants seven on the day.
