The St. Lawrence University field hockey team beat the Flying Dutchmen of Lebanon Valley 4-3 in the opening game of the William Smith Tournament on Saturday afternoon in Geneva, N.Y.
With just over a minute left to play, junior
Mckenzie Haberl slotted a shot past the keeper to even the score at three. Not willing to settle for overtime, the Saints kept the pressure up and first-year
Ciara Halloran ripped a shot from the edge of the circle that got deflected high and looped over the outstretched goalie with just 15 seconds left in the game.
"I'm proud of the way we finished today," head coach
Fran Grembowicz said. "We had to battle back three times and to put the ball away and with 15 seconds left was just a great finish. Lebanon Valley forced us to adjust our game, and I feel we found our stride late in the third quarter and throughout the fourth to get into our style of play."
Lebanon Valley were first to strike in the game, when Rachel Wright knocked a loose ball in front of the goalie and into the back of the net. With less than two minutes left in the first half, junior
Jenny L'Hommedieu tied the score at one when she connected with the ball during scrum in front of the goal.
The rest of the game was similarly back and forth, with the Dutchmen taking the lead, and the Saints evening the score. Rachel Wright scored the first two Lebanon Valley goals and Emily Kline had the third.
Jenny L'Hommedieu had the first Saints' goal, and Haberl scored the second and third.
Goalkeeper
Cara Vredenburg made two saves on her way to her third win of the season, while Corinne Kearney made four in the loss.
The Dutchmen led 10-7 in shots, and 7-5 in penalty corners, but the Saints had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
