Game Recap: Baseball |

Goretti's HR Caps DH Sweep of RIT

Andrew Circelli was 3-for-7 with two doubles, and Michael Goretti hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning of the second game to lead the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a sweep of RIT in a Liberty League doubleheader on Monday afternoon in Rochester.

The Saints won the first game 4-0, then came back with a 5-2 win in the second game thanks to Goretti's heroics.

Goretti was 2-for-5 in the second game, playing as the designated hitter in his first career start.

Seven different pitchers combined to allow just two runs in 18 innings of work, holding RIT hitters to a .183 batting average with just one extra base hit.

With the wins, the Saints sweep the season series with the Tigers 4-0, and have now won seven straight games, the longest winning streak for the program since the team won seven straight games early in 2015.

"The team is coming together at the right time," said Saints interim head coach Kenny Collins. "We have a challenging schedule ahead, but we are playing confidently and coming through in big moments. Our next job is getting prepared for this weekend."

The Saints, now 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League, will face first-place Rochester in a Liberty League series this weekend. St. Lawrence goes on the road for two games on Saturday before returning to Tom Fay Field for a pair of games on Sunday. RIT fell to 6-17, 2-10.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 4, RIT 0

Nicholas Butler was 3-for-4 to lead the saints at the plate, and Patrick Greenan, Cameron Morrissey and Brett Parker combined for 10 strikeouts in a one-hit shutout in the seven-inning game.

Greenan allowed just one walk in the first three innings, and Morrissey earned the win with just one walk allowed in the fourth and fifth innings. Brett Parker picked up the save, allowing a hit and a walk over the final two innings.

St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Brian Comerford in the second inning, then extended the lead to 3-0 in Circelli's RBI double and Cristian Forgione's RBI single. Butler added an insurance run with an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning.

Forgione was 2-for-4 for the Saints, and Matt Marowitz had a double for the Saints, who were perfect defensively.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 5, RIT 2

Matthew Killian and Jake Delaney worked one-out walks in the top of the 11th inning for the Saints, and Goretti followed with a home run to left field to give the Saints their first lead of the game, and Butler shut down the Tigers' offense in the bottom half of the frame to earn a save in his first collegiate appearance on the mound.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Luke McNamara in the first winning and a St. Lawrence error in the sixth, but the Saints tied the score in the seventh, with Goretti earning an RBI and reaching on an error, and Butler adding an RBI single to score Goretti.

Goretti, Circelli and Jimmy Liberatore were all 2-for-5 to lead the Saints at the plate. James Cronin added a triple.

Michael Watson allowed one run in four innings in the start for the Saints, and Ryan Carson allowed one run over the next two. Liam Reiner earned the win, pitching four shutout innings and allowing just three hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
