Jack Hennessey recorded a season-high six goals, including the first four of the game for the Saints, as the No. 14 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team defeated Ithaca 17-7 in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.
With today's win, head coach
Mike Mahoney '93, P '22, '24 recorded his 250th career win with the Saints.
"I'm fortunate to have as good an assistant as anyone in the country in
Tom Ryan and some great staffs over the years," said Mahoney. "We have had some great players come through this program who truly make this number a reality. Today we are just so thankful to be 1-0 and we look forward to the next opportunity to compete."
Mark Mahoney and
Judge Murphy both tallied hat tricks for the Saints, while
Ben Hutchinson scored twice and
Chris Jordan scored once and assisted on four others.
Ben Murtagh also scored once for the Scarlet and Brown and sophomore
Charlie Graves scored his first collegiate goal.
Zach Prime went 10-for-15 at the faceoff dot and picked up a team-best six ground balls, while
Henry Schibli caused three turnovers and
Brian Gannon and
Tripp Clark both caused two.
Hennessey scored the first four goals of the game for the Saints, giving St. Lawrence a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter. The Bombers' Connor Brumfield brought the game within one at 11:19 of the second frame, but the Saints went on to score 12 straight goals, including the only six goals in the third quarter, to take a 16-3 lead with 12:29 to play in the fourth.
Ithaca tallied four goals down the stretch, but had fallen too deep to force a comeback over the Saints.
"I thought we played our best game of the year," Mahoney added. "Offensively we were really clicking starting with Henny early and many other guys contributing. Defensively we were very solid. We had great communication and effort and Helm bailed us out with a couple of great saves especially early on."
Connor Brumfield and Charlie Niebuhr both scored two goals for the Bombers, while Hunter Wallace picked up four ground balls and Jake Hall-Goldman caused two turnovers.
Saints' goalkeeper
William Helm recorded the win with nine saves. Both Elliot LaGorce and
Mike Nassif saw a bit of action as well with one save apiece. Connor Thornton made 12 saves for Ithaca before being relieved.
The Saints improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Ithaca fell to 4-3 and 2-2.
The Saints will host Clarkson on Wednesday, April 28 at 4 p.m.
