Saints Sweep RIT for Fifth Straight Win

Andrew Circelli was 4-for-8 with a double, a triple, a home run and five RBI to lead the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a sweep of RIT in a Liberty League baseball doubleheader on Tom Fay Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints won the first game 7-6 thanks to a walkoff two-run single by Jimmy Liberatore, and Circelli and Butler hit home runs in the second game to lead the Saints to a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.

St. Lawrence improved to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League. The Saints have won five games in a row, the longest winning streak for the program since the team won seven in a row early in the 2015 campaign.

"It always feels good to win a doubleheader against a tough conference opponent," said Saints' interim head coach Kenny Collins. "We had some very clutch moments throughout the game and I give our guys a ton of credit for their preparation. We have a challenging schedule coming up and need to keep improving every time we step on the field."

The two teams will meet again in another Liberty League doubleheader on Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Rochester.

Game 1: St. Lawrence 7, RIT 6

The Saints took a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Butler and Circelli, and Butler later scored on a throwing error when Circelli stole second base.

The Tigers, however, scored six unanswered runs to build a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning in the seven-inning contest.

Daniel Capra cut the lead to two runs, scoring on an RBI groundout in the third, and the Tigers took a 5-3 lead with four runs in the fourth. Capra drove in the second run with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, and Patrick Blackall tied the game with a sacrifice fly. RIT scored another run on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and one more with a bases-loaded walk before Saints' starting pitcher Andrew Matthews was able to work out of the jam with an inning-ending strikeout. Ian Libby picked up an RBI with a bases-loaded ground ball in the sixth to push the RIT lead to three runs.

Circelli got the Saints back to within two runs with an RBI double in the sixth inning, setting up Liberatore's game-winning hit in the seventh.

Cameron Morrissey picked up the win for the Saints, allowing just one run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts in three innings of relief work for the Saints. Butler was 2-for-3 and Circelli was 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Saints at the plate.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 7, RIT 5

Circelli got the Saints' offense rolling in the second game with an RBI triple in the first inning and a two-run home run over the left field fence in the third.

RIT cut the lead to one, as Luke McNamara hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and Randy Dodig had an RBI ground ball in the seventh, but Butler's three-run shot over the left field fence gave the Saints a four-run cushion in the seventh inning and Cristian Forgione added an RBI double in the eighth inning to push the Saints' lead to 7-2.

Liam Reiner got two quick outs in the top of the ninth, but after an error and a bunt single, Capra hit a three-run home run to right to make it interesting. Reiner shut the door, however, in the next at-bat, inducing a game-ending pop up to secure the sweep.

Jack Sylvia picked up the win for the Saints, allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts and no walks in six innings pitched. Brett Parker had two solid innings of relief, allowing just one run after loading the bases with no outs.

Circelli was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Forgione was 2-for-3 at the plate.

McNamara was 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers, while John Bagley was 2-for-4.
