William Montgomery was a combined 6-for-9 with three RBI and three stolen bases, and
Andrew Circelli hit a three-run home run to lead the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a sweep of Elmira College, 14-10 and 6-1, in a pair of 7-inning games at Falcon Park in Auburn on Saturday.
Montgomery was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in the opener, then went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases in the second game as the Saints evened their record to 6-6 on the season.
"Today was a good effort and we played two clean games," said Saints interim baseball coach
Kenny Collins. "We still need to finish games better, but Elmira is a tough opponent and they fought in the box. We are looking forward to a competitive series next weekend with RIT."
Game 1: St. Lawrence 14, Elmira 10
Circelli hit a towering blast over the left field fence to give the Saints a 13-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Elmira made it close with a six-run sixth inning and three more in the seventh before
Brett Parker came in to shut the door, allowing just a walk while getting the final three outs.
Andrew Matthews earned the win with a solid five-inning outing, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts.Â
Chris Watson was 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI, and
Cristian Forgione was 2-for-3 with a double for the Saints.
Nicholas Butler was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Joe Morrone was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Elmira, while Myles Littlejohn was 2-for-4 with four RBI for the Soaring Eagles.
Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, Elmira 1
Jack Sylvia scattered six hits over five scoreless innings with six strikeouts and three walks, and
Drew Courtwright was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Saints to a win in the second game.
St. Lawrence picked up a pair of unearned runs on an error in the second inning, and Courtwright increased the lead to 3-0 for the Saints with an RBI single in the third inning. St. Lawrence scored three more runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Jake Delaney, an RBI groundout by
Matthew Killian and an RBI single by Montgomery.
Morrone had an RBI triple in the seventh inning to account for Elmira's lone run.
Cameron Morrissey had one inning of scoreless relief, and Forgione caught Elmira baserunners three times on stolen base attempts. He has thrown out 8-of-17 stolen base attempts against him this season.
