Jack Hennessey and
Peter Koch combined for eight points to lead the No. 12 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 win over Vassar in the Liberty League opener on Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Hennessey scored four goals, assisted on another, picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover for the Scarlet and Brown.
Peter Koch recorded a hat trick, while
Mark Mahoney scored two goals and added an assist and
Chris Jordan scored twice. Brothers
Stew Hutchinson and
Ben Hutchinson both finished with two points, one goal and one assist each.
Ben Hutchinson and
Xander de Roetth both notched their first collegiate goals in today's win.
Brendan Brigham went 10-for-13 at the faceoff dot and led the Saints with six ground balls, while
Patrick Gillis went 4-for-7, and
Guthrie Little picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
St. Lawrence built a quick 3-0 lead over the Brewers with goals from Hennessey, Koch and
Stew Hutchinson, but the Brewers managed two goals before the end of the first quarter to bring the game within one.
It was all Saints in the second quarter, scoring six straight goals to build a 9-2 lead by halftime.
Vassar opened the third frame with a man-up goal from Connor Deehan, but another run of four straight goals from the Saints increased their lead to 13-3. In the run, Mahoney notched his sixth and seventh goals of the season, while Jordan added his second and Hennessey added his fifth.
The Brewers and the Saints traded goals in the fourth quarter, but the Brewers were unable to mount a comeback.
"I was happy with how the we got off to a good start coming off the bus and then really settled in to take control of the game in the second quarter," said head men's lacrosse coachÂ
Mike Mahoney '93, P '22, '24. "Overall, I thought we played good, solid team defense and had some good balance on the offensive end as well."
Five different members of the Brewers' squad each scored once with Maximus Albanese and Deehan each recording a goal and an assist. Dillion Dierman went 4-for-9 on faceoffs and Zack Henig picked up a team-best three ground balls.
William Helm made three saves in goal for the Saints, while Aidan Gallagher made eight for the Brewers.
St. Lawrence held a 43-32 advantage in shots and a 22-11 edge in shots on goal.
With today's win, the Saints improved to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Liberty League play, while the Brewers fell to 0-1, with today being their first game of the season.
The Saints are scheduled to host Skidmore on Saturday, April 3 at 2 p.m.
