Joe Marsh Challenge Reaches Goal

The effort by Skating Saints alumni and supportive Laurentians to honor former St. Lawrence University Head Men's Hockey Coach Joe Marsh has reached the goal of raising $1 million. This successful, collective effort will name the Men's Team Suite in the renovated Appleton Arena in honor of Coach Marsh.

The Joe Marsh Challenge was sparked thanks to an anonymous donor who agreed to give $250,000 if fundraising reached the $750,000 level.  The University received gifts from 169 Laurentians at various levels, with the Hockey Alumni Association playing a leadership role in both supporting the effort and encouraging others to give.

The University intends to plan an in-person dedication with Coach Marsh and his family, friends and supporters, when it is safe to do so.

Joe Marsh retired as the Saints' head men's hockey coach in 2012 following a 26-year career which included some of the brightest moments in program history. Marsh compiled a record of 468-399-72 in his 26 seasons, the most career victories of any active ECAC coach at the time of his retirement, and became the third coach in NCAA Division I history to accrue more than 400 wins at one institution. The seventh coach since 1951 to win multiple Spencer Penrose Awards as NCAA Division I Coach of the Year and ECAC Coach of the Year a record four times, he won five ECAC championships, took teams to eight NCAA tournaments and made two Frozen Four appearances. He coached 18 All America players, seven Hobey Baker finalists, and six ECAC Player of the Year Award winners.

Coach Marsh is now the volunteer assistant for the Saints women's hockey team, supporting his former player and assistant coach, Chris Wells '92, who is the program's head coach.
