Saints Fall to Golden Knights in 17-Inning Marathon

Mike Mieczkowski scored on a sacrifice fly in the 17th inning to lift the Clarkson baseball team to a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence on Sunday afternoon in Potsdam.

The Golden Knights scored two runs in the second inning, but the Saints cut the lead to one in the fourth inning and tied the game on an RBI single by Nicholas Butler with two outs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.

"The guys played very hard today," said Saints interim head coach Kenny Collins. "We had some clutch moments and fought until the end on both sides of the ball. Clarkson is a tough team and they played a very clean game. Our execution still needs some work, but the effort is there. We are looking forward to putting everything together next Saturday at Union."

Joe Stockman gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead on an RBI single, and Jonathan Irons followed with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 2-0.

Butler cut the lead to one with a bases loaded RBI groundout, reaching on a fielder's choice and leaving runners on first and second with one out, but the next two batters hit fly balls that were caught, leaving the score 2-1 in favor of Clarkson.

James Cronin, who scored the Saints' first run, led off the ninth inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then tagged up and got to third after a fly ball out, and Butler plated Cronin with a single to left to force extra innings.

Mieczkowski led off the Clarkson 17th with a single, got to second on a single by Nee, then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, setting up the game-winning sacrifice fly by Kent Wilson.

St. Lawrence's pitching staff got out of a number of jams in extra innings. Clarkson loaded the bases in the 10th, 12th and 15th innings, but the bullpen got out of all three innings without allowing a run to continue to extend the game.

St. Lawrence had its best opportunity to score in the extra innings in the 12th inning, with Butler leading off with a walk, followed by a single by Chris Watson. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning Jimmy Liberatore entered the game as a pinch hitter and drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but the next two batters struck out.

Jack Sylvia had a solid start on the mound for the Saints, allowing two unearned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Andrew Matthews and Liam Reiner both pitched four innings in relief, both allowing just one hit. Matthews struck out two and walked one, while Reiner struck out one and walked four. Combined with the efforts of Cameron Morrissey, Michael Watson and Brett Parker, the Saints' bullpen allowed one run on four hits with 10 walks and six strikeouts over 12 and two-thirds innings.

Griffin Tubbs went eight and two-thirds innings for the Golden Knights, striking out 10 with just four hits and one walk allowed. Derrick Lewis picked up the win, holding the Saints hitless over the final two innings with two hit batters and one walk.

The Saints, now 0-3 on the season, will head to Union College to play a non-league doubleheader on Saturday.
