Andrew Circelli hit a grand slam in the first game, and the St. Lawrence University baseball team totaled 28 hits while the pitching staff allowed just 13 in a 9-1, 13-2 non-league doubleheader sweep of Plattsburgh State in Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon.
The wins were the first of the season for the Saints, now 2-3 on the season, and the first for interim head coach
Kenny Collins.
"The guys came ready to play today," said Collins. "We had contributions all throughout the lineup and pitching staff. After a couple good weeks of practice, we were all itching to get back on the field and our energy was great."
Circelli's grand slam came in the sixth inning of the first game with the Saints trailing 1-0. St. Lawrence didn't trail the rest of the day, coasting to a 9-1 win in the first game and scoring three runs in the top of the first inning in the second game.
Circelli was on the base all day, going 3-for-5 with five walks. The Saints were also very active on the base paths, stealing a total of 10 bases, led by Circelli, who had two in both games.
James Cronin was 4-for-8 with two doubles and two stolen bases on the day for the Saints.
St. Lawrence will face Ithaca in a neutral site contest in its final scheduled non-league game on Wednesday in Cortland.
Game One: St. Lawrence 9, Plattsburgh State 1
After Circelli's blast, the Saints tacked on five more runs and the bullpen held the Cardinals' lineup in check.
Cronin drove in a run with an RBI double in the seventh,
Matthew Killian did the same in the eighth, and
Drew Courtwright and
Brian Comerford sandwiched RBI singles around an bases loaded walk by
Cristian Forgione in the ninth.
Cameron Morrissey picked up the win with three innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one walk with two strikeouts. Starting pitcher
Jack Sylvia allowed just one run on five hits with five strikeouts in four innings.
Stephen Bryant and Aaron Roman were both 2-for-4 to lead Plattsburgh State at the plate.Â
Game Two: St. Lawrence 13, Plattsburgh State 2 (7 innings)
Drew Courtwright was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Comerford was also 3-for-4 to lead the Saints in the second game.
Nicholas Butler, Forgione and Courtwright each hit RBI singles in the first inning for the Saints, and after an RBI groundout by Plattsburgh in the second inning, Comerford restored the three-run lead by scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Courtwright made it 6-1 with a two-run single and scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning. Circelli, Comerford

Michael Goretti added RBI singles and
Chris Watson hit a sacrifice fly to give the Saints a 13-1 lead in the sixth inning.
Andrew Veit scored on a wild pitch to account for Plattsburgh State's second run.
Butler and Liberatore were both 2-for-5 at the plate for the Saints, while Steve Messerschmitt was 2-for-3 for the Cardinals.
Andrew Matthews earned the win on the mound for the Saints, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks in four innings pitched.
