Saints Defeat Castleton 22-1 in Season Opener

Sophomore Charlotte Powell scored five goals and recorded two assists for seven points to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to a 22-1 win over Castleton in their season opener on Saturday afternoon at North Country Field.

Jaime Allan recorded four goals for the Scarlet and Brown, while Isabel Silvia scored two goals and added an assist. Nicole Stanton and Eliza Keller each finished with two goals apiece, while Kylie Murphy, Morgan Arakelian, Laura Wells, Liz Evans, Malia MacDonald and Emma Polumbo all scored for the Saints. Both Murphy and Wells finished with four assists, while Powell and Jacqui Cloutier picked up two ground balls each and Cloutier won five draw controls.

It was all Saints from the start as the Scarlet and Brown built a 13-0 lead over the Spartans by halftime.

St. Lawrence notched another nine goals in the second half, before Castleton's lone goal came with 8:57 remaining in the second.

"The Saints came into this game very prepared," said head coach Hannah Corkery '11. "And I am very proud that everyone contributed to our success today. Each member of the team stuck to their role and the game plan. We are looking forward to heading into next week with this success, while also working towards our next game."


 
Kimberly McCarthy scored the lone goal for Castleton, while five members of the Spartan's squad recorded a ground ball and Lacey Greenamyre tallied six draw control wins.
 
First-year goalkeeper Courtney Lynn recorded her first collegiate win for the Saints with one save and Castleton's starting goalkeeper Raven Payne finished with 15 saves for the Spartan's.
 
St. Lawrence recorded a 38-2 advantage in shots on goal and led 18-6 in draw controls and 11-5 in ground balls.
 
The Saints are scheduled to head to Union for their first Liberty League contest of the season on Friday, March 26 at 4 p.m.
